Alternative Inca Trail trek from Salkantay to Machu Picchu.
Voted one of National Geographics top 25 treks in the world, this Inca trek to Machu Picchu takes you along an ancient Inca trail up close to the shimmering flanks of Salkantay (the highest mountain in the range at 6271m).
It is a beautiful, though at times tough trek to Machu Picchu, which covers an impressive sweep of altitudes; from the 4,600m pass over Salkantay down through puna grassland; from cloud forest to sub-tropical jungle buzzing with humming birds and orchids, at just 2,000 metres above sea level.
The 5 day trek culminates with a guided tour of the Machu Picchu ruins. This is a great way to trek to the lost Inca City and experience a wide variety of Andean micro-climates and culture.
Off the beaten track:
Near Machu Picchu you can also visit the stunning ruins of Llactapacta, or head to the beautifully built hot springs at Santa Theresa. From here, it's on to Aguas Calientes and the foot of the Machu Picchu ruins.
A true Andean odyssey, this trek to Machu Picchu through the dramatic Cordillera Vilcabamba offers a wonderful alternative for those who want to take a less-traveled and exceptionally beautiful route to Machu Picchu.
