Whilst others make a beeline for the highest peaks we venture onto some of the best, yet ignored, tops of the Cairngorm National Park. This is where we have grandstand views and the mountains to ourselves. These innovative routes take us up hidden glens, the very places illicit stills were once secreted away.
Arrive: day before walking begins, try to aim for between 5 & 7pm
Day 1: We make a gentle start to the whiskey tour with an ascent from the secretive wooded glens of what was illicit whiskey country to the summit of Carn Daimh. With panoramic views across rolling hills to the high Cairngorms we descend via the Speyside Way to find ourselves in the middle of the Glenlivet Distillery!! After a tour we follow the River Livet to complete the circuit before dropping in at Tomintoul’s renowned Whiskey Castle for a tasting.
Day 2: This is a wonderful whiskey tour route on the renowned Rothiemurchus Estate. Winding our way along the “Thieves Road” through ancient Caledonian pines and past beautiful Loch an Eilean we climb hidden valleys to Strathspey.
Day 3: takes us to a remote part of the RSPB’s huge Abernethy Reserve to climb Carn Bheadhair. Renowned for its wildlife, the reserve is one of the finest examples of what was once was. It is a place where time has stood still.
Depart: day after walking is finished, after breakfast
