The Great Rift Valley is a giant tear across the earth’s surface visible even from space. An amazing Ethiopian Adventure!
The Great Rift Valley walls rise sheer on either side to towering heights and floor of 50 km. It is an inhospitable desert with many points more than 100 meters (328 feet) below sea level and noon-time temperatures soaring above 50C (122F).
The landscape of the Danakil seems carved from the infernos of hell; with frequent earth tremors and several still-active volcanoes.
An uninhabitable as this place may seem, it is nevertheless a home to thousands of afar nomads. The valley is also studded with lakes and savannah grassland offering visitors a true safari experience.
Continue your trip to the stunning Sof Omar caves, spectacular and extensive underground caverns that stretch 16km.
Visitors make their way armed with torches and map far into the bowels of the earth to an extraordinary number of arched portals, high eroded ceilings, and deep echoing chambers.
