This walking adventure for mountain holiday makers finds itself in the little known corner of the European Alps, where Italy, Austria and Slovenia meet, is astonishingly picturesque.
The Julian Alps are a stunning limestone mountain range, home to Slovenia’s only National Park and rising up to a height 2864m at the summit of Mount Triglav (‘Old Three Heads’). The peaks are jagged and spectacular, presenting the walker with wonderfully varied and beautiful mountain scenery, and with evocative evidence of the fierce struggles between Austrian and Italian troops in World War One.
The wooded slopes lead down to deep gorges and ravines, where turquoise rivers, such as the pristine Soča, have carved out beautiful whitewater courses, waterfalls and caves. The region is carefully protected, so the spring flowers bloom in carpets, and deer, boar, chamois, wolves and even brown bears and lynx survive in relative abundance.
Explore the Julian Alps on foot on an independent break, choose to travel whenever you like, and stay as long as you wish (minimum 3 nights).
There are no fixed itineraries – you are free to walk and hike as much or as little as you like. As such the trip is suitable for walkers of all abilities, parties of mixed ability and families.
You can choose our 'No-Frills Hosted' Escape which is a purely self guided option or upgrade to our 'Original' Escape and join 3 organised walks a week as well as receiving a delicious, deli-style packed lunch each day. Both options include a hire car (carbon offset) as part of the package (for maximum flexibility in an area with no public transport to speak of) and the services of our resident Upland Manager.
The self guided walking excursions include short, medium and full day walks: to admire a tiny frescoed chapel and woodland waterfalls, paddle in the gentle Nadiža River, or take a stroll through nearby meadows or explore the Tolmin Gorge. You can explore the fields and pastures of the Drežnica plateau, discover some charming traditional villages or complete a historical circuit of Kobarid; head for the summit of Mountain Matajur with views into Italy and magnificent beech woods, gaze at the dramatic peaks around the Vršič Pass and seek out the source of the turquoise Soča.
If opting for an 'Original' trip, on organised walks you may visit a poet’s grave at Sveti Lovrenc, explore some extensive WW1 fortifications, walk grassy slopes to the viewpoint at Sleme, reach the summit of Krasji Vrh (1774m) or even that of Krn itself (2244m) and the Batognica battlefield.
If you would prefer to visit the area without having to drive, please ask about our 'Original Car-Free' Escapes.
