The Apuseni Mountains, are a world unto itself. Comprising a large variety of geographical forms, not very high (the highest peak is Bihorul Peak – 1849 m) but with breathtaking karstic landscapes and traditional livelihoods, hosting a rich fauna and flora, Apuseni Mountains are unique in Romania and, in many respects, in Europe. This world of deep forests and large silky meadows, impressive gorges and canyons, legendary waterfalls and fascinating caves is generous home for an abundant variety of animals and plants. The unique flora of Apuseni Mountains makes the region extra attractive. Several micro climates and the complex geographic structure of the mountains created ideal conditions for a wide variety, numerous endemic and even a lot of extremely rare plants. Big predators, such as brown bears and wolves are still roaming the Carpathian Mountains in Romania. Wild cats and lynx are also around. You will also meet people whose unique way of life is still a long row of traditions and customs and whose stories are as old as the mountains. Regarded as the most representative mountain population of Romania, the “Motzi” people give character to the area, through their way of life, specific architecture and local customs. Meeting the "Motzi" means not only a voyage back in time but also a return to the roots, to ancestral traditions, in an unspoiled environment, harsh and welcoming at the same time.

Getting there

The Apuseni Mountains lays on the western part of Romania.
Most of our trips start and end in Oradea, which is one of the main entrances in the mountains, coming from west.This specific trip starts in Runc hamlet, in the central part of the Apuseni Mountains.

• By Road Oradea is on the E60, a major European route which makes a connection between Western and Eastern Europe. If you come from Western Europe is easily to access Oradea via Vienna and Budapest (6 hours driving from Vienna and 3 hours driving from Budapest). If you come from Eastern Europe or from the eastern part of Romania, there are plenty of routes to reach Oradea.
• By Rail Oradea can be reached by train from most of the big cities of Romania (Bucharest-12 hours, Brasov-7 hours, Timisoara-3 hours, Cluj Napoca-3 hours, Iasi-16 hours) as well as from Budapest (5 hours).
• By Air You can easily fly to Budapest from all around the world and from there you can take a train, a minivan, rent a car or ask for us to pick you up at the airport. If not included in your price, a car transfer is between 60-100 euros and takes about 4 hours. There are also options to fly from UK to Timisoara (170 km from Oradea), or Arad (110 km from Oradea), Bucharest (659 km), Cluj Napoca (160 km) from where you can come by train or we can arrange a car transfer. There are many cheap flights available from UK to Romania, run by companies such as WizzAir, EasyJet or BlueAir. Search for flights from the get there section of this site.
