Explore Scotland whisky country to the fullest with Mountain Innovations on this Speyside walking holiday. Walk the smugglers’ routes and taste (not compulsory) connoisseur’s whisky under the expert guidance of Mike Drury @ the Whisky Castle, Tomintoul – home to the world’s largest bottle of whisky.
Whilst others make a beeline for hiking the highest peaks in Scotland we venture onto some of the best, yet ignored tops of the Cairngorm National Park. This is where we have grandstand views and the mountains to ourselves. These innovative walking routes take us up hidden glens, Cairngorm “Shangri-La’s”, the very places illicit stills were once secreted away.
Day 1: We make a gentle start to the week with an ascent from the secretive wooded glens of what was illicit whiskey country to the summit of Carn Daimh. With panoramic views across rolling hills to the high Cairngorms we descend via the Speyside Way to find ourselves in the middle of the Glenlivet Distillery!! After a tour we follow the River Livet to complete the circuit before dropping in at Tomintoul’s renowned Whiskey Castle (link) for a tasting and a chance to stock up on a bottle for the week
Day 2: This is a wonderful route on the renowned Rothiemurchus Estate. Winding our way along the “Thieves Road” through ancient Caledonian pines and past beautiful Loch an Eilean we climb hidden valleys to the wonderful panorama offered by Creag Dhubh & The Argyll Stone: to our right precipitous flanks rise above Loch Einich to the lofty Sgoran Dubh Mhor, to our left wide open vistas across Strathspey’s patchwork of woods, fields and lochs
Day 3: We head deep into what was illicit distilling territory – the Braes of Glenlivet. The Ladder hills provide us with a relatively gentle but wonderfully elevated hill walk amongst broad ridges and steep sweeping heather clad slopes. Panoramic views of the Grampians and back to the high tops of the Cairngorms are our reward in this stronghold for the Hen Harrier, Red Grouse and Golden Plover.
Day 4: We climb the prominent landmark of Ben Rinnes with its commanding views over the surrounding countryside & far beyond. To the north across the Moray Firth to the hills of Ross, Sutherland and Caithness, to the west the peaks of the high Cairngorms.
Day 5: The Fara circuit provides a fine ridge walk with fantastic views down the full seventeen mile length of Loch Ericht to the remote heights of Ben Alder and down on to Dalwhinnie distillery.
