The muchbetter Guide to Val d'Isere, France

Skiing in val d'isere

Why do we like it?

Val d’Isere is a very attractive and high altitude resort that is often favourably compared to Chamonix, Mont Blanc... and with fewer queues!

Ski hot spot Val d'IsereSet in a large river valley in the French Alps at 1820m, Val D'Isere is a mecca for outdoor junkies in both winter and summer. Skiers and boarders of all abilities can enjoy the plentiful array of lifts and specially designed runs available. Skiers in Val d'Isere will find plenty of wide blue slopes such as the ‘Ski Tranquille’ area, as well as off-piste steep black slopes through areas of forest nearby, known as the ‘Foret’. The ski resort is also widely recognised as being one of the more reliable areas for snowfall thanks to its elevation and location.

Town of Val d'IsereThe Val d'Isere town itself has an abundance of charm and is becoming increasingly pedestrian friendly. In season, there is a very lively and youthful nightlife with a largely British influence. It is also home to a lot of events, concerts, late night open street parties and snow sports competitions such as ski racing and snow polo, which are really worth experiencing. The ski resort is becoming increasingly pricey, but there are plenty of day trips to places like Tignes available.

In summer Val d'Isere is great for road biking, and there is some famous rafting nearby on the Isere river. Mountain Biking in Val d'Isere is very technical and not very expansive, with much more available in nearby Tignes. Not ready to give up skiing? No worries, there summer skiing available on the Pissaillas Glacier.
