Event Notice: Comrades Marathon

What is the news/event?
The Comrades Marathon, an 89km (56miles) ultramarathon that takes place in South Africa every year. It is internationally recognised for the body sapping challenge it poses and the camaraderie it fosters among its thousands of participants. The race is run to celebrate mankind’s spirit over adversity and is the world’s greatest ultramarathon. In 2010 the Comrades Marathon set a new Guinness World Record as an ultramarathon over 80 km (50miles) with the most number of finishers which were 14 343.
 
Where is the news/event happening?
The Comrades Marathon is run in KwaZulu Natal, a province in the Eastern part of South Africa, known for its beautiful landscape and beaches. The race alternates between two cities in the province. These cities are Durban, a coastal city and Pietermaritzburg the capital city of KwaZulu Natal. The race alternates annually between the “UP RUN” starting from Durban and finishing in Pietermaritzburg and the “DOWN RUN” starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing in Durban. The 2012 Comrades Marathon will be a “DOWN RUN” starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing in Durban and takes place on 3 June 2012. How can someone get involved?
Entries open on the 01 September 2011 and close on 30 November 2011 and will be limited to a maximum of 18 000. Entries will close once this quota has been reached even if it is before 30 November 2011.
