Surf competition in aid of Surf Action

22nd August 2011

If you head down to Gwithian beach, near Hayle on the 3rd and 4th of September, you'll get a chance to see some of the UK's best longboarders in action, competing in the Hip Wiggler Invitational Surf Competition.

The Hip Wiggler Invitational will see 16 surfers compete in a competition aimed more towards expressing ones individual style, and having fun - all in the aid of Surf Action.

Surf Action is a unique charity, using surfing and beach environment to aid combat veterans. They hold beach clinics for veterans and their families each Friday at Gwithian Towans.

Competitors will be using older-style longboards, with a single fin and no leashes, as per the 1960s, when longboarding was at its pinnacle in the UK. The day will also include bach activities, BBQs and evening entertainment for all the family.

Organiser James Parry commented “My vision for this contest is to bring the best classic longboarders together to inspire, influence and educate. This competition is about style, fluidness, power, creativity and using the entire length of a surfboard whilst in perfect trim with the wave.”

The fun starts at 9am, however the surfing will commence when the waves are deemed perfect for the longboards...
