My arrival in Morzine was quite unintended. My original destination was Val d Isere but a few of my mates were ready to do their second season in Morzine and they waxed lyrically about the place. Basically, they lined me up a job, and when I look back, thank goodness I decided on Morzine as we had a fantastic ski season, there was a wonderful friendly buzz about town, and after the snow disappeared their was a wealth of mountain biking to be getting on with!
If you’re out skiing or snowboarding then the area offers a very diverse riding experience due to an abundance of natural features and huge terrain. If the snow is plentiful, I absolutely love the off piste area around Point du Nyon and Chamossiere. For a completely different off piste experience, head for any of the couloirs which head down into Les Crozet on the Swiss side of the hill - Just remember to have your off-piste equipment with you, complete with a working transceiver (and that you know how to operate it!).
For a different kind of buzz, try one of the many snow-parks the area boasts and on any other day, except white outs, head to the Fornet for a day playing around all the natural features.
Every year the “in place” or “seasonaires” preferred watering hole changes but it has to be said that year after year Bar Robinson is consistently rammed after a day on the hill. On first look at the place you’d think it would only ever have a few old local French boys drinking in it but the après ski brigade flock to it from about 3pm. It’s the strong lager and unique atmosphere that really gets everyone talking and buzzing about the day. New to the resort in 10/11 is Tuesday’s après ski party at the Tremplin Bar by the Pleney lift where the Bass Camp boys get a lively crowd jumping and dancing to quality tunes. Definitely not to be missed! Also keep your eyes open for the extra late-night-outs, that the Bass Camp boys put on, which is always a brilliant “pumping” night out!
If you’re getting hungry then don’t miss a night out at the buzzy L’Etoile restaurant or for more contemporary surroundings head to the newly renovated Chaudanne, a little out of the town centre. If it’s just some fast food you’re after then Morzine now has two Fish and Chippies, both handily located next to the ubiquitous Bar Robinson.Morzine has got something to offer everyone at any time of the year but favorite times have got to be early winter season when we sometimes get great snow with no one on the hill and also April when the sun is out, there’s plenty of snow, the crowds are thinning so there’s a superb chilled feel to the whole resort.
Getting here is easy, with plenty of daily flights arriving into Geneva airport, only just over an hour’s drive away. There’s a selection of transfer companies to get you up to the resort. Check out Ski Lifts.com for some great rates, or hire a car and make your own way up. Once in resort, getting around is easy as most amenities are centrally placed with a free bus service linking the lift systems and outlying parts of the village.
