The Plastiki to set sail today on a global call to action

4 years in the making, the Plastiki will finally be setting sail from under San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge at 9.30 am PST today (Saturday), to deliver a truly important 'message in a bottle'.

Adventurer and environmentalist David de Rothschild, along with his crew including skipper Jo Royle, co-skipper David Thomson, Olav Heyerdahl, National Geographic filmmaker Max Jourdan and Myoo Media’s Vern Moen, will embark on the adventure aboard a 60-foot catamaran made from 12,500 reclaimed bottles and srPET, a fully recyclable plastic.

An “off-the-grid” vessel relying primarily on renewable energy systems, the Plastiki and her crew will journey more than 11,000 nautical miles in 100 days, drawing attention to the health of our oceans – in particular the colossal amounts of plastic debris. A quick browse of their site told us for example that nearly 50% of all plastic bottles end up in the ocean. Did you know that?

Their route will take them across the Pacific Ocean, stopping at many atolls and islands on the way for research and clean ups, before eventually docking in Sydney harbour.

By showcasing waste as a resource and demonstrating real-world solutions through the design and construction of the Plastiki, we think this is a truly innovative and important adventure. We wish them all the best, and will keep you updated on their progress.
