Not used any native timbers in the building and finishing of our new cottages as we believe our guests would rather see the trees growing! The New Zealand "bush" is to a great extent what makes this country so attractive.
Limited the visibility of our buildings from the beach using shrubs and other plantings whilst still maintaining a sea view and privacy for our guests.
Used a backdrop of trees for all buildings.
Employed regressive colours for the buildings so that they blend with the environment.
Taken steps to protect the archaeological sites (Maori middens/ rubbish dumps) on our property from erosion or destruction.
A policy of recycling all waste where possible.
A compost heap for all biodegradable rubbish.
Installed several nesting boxes to provide homes for our Little Blue penguins.
Developed a small wetlands to encourage native fauna and flora.
Started a coastal revegetation project on our beachfront to reinstate native coastal plants.
A garden where we grow fruit and vegetables wherever possible without the use of sprays.
Installed a sophisticated sewage treatment system that will not only prevent pollution of the beach but also the use the highly-purified waste water to fertilise our shrubberies and flower gardens.
Using natural oils rather than solvent-based finishes for our wood surfaces where practical.
Installed energy saving devices where possible.
We have aimed to make our operation eco-friendly in a way that is "almost invisible" to our guests and still provides a luxurious treat to whose who stay at "Adrift".
