A great alternative to the Me, Me, Me surf trip. Connecting with locals and teaching/ learning. Surfing perfect waves in a remote location but having the company and camaraderie of being part of a team with a goal.

Brilliant experience! I have never been to South America and wow! I did not expect anything that I experienced. I think those are the best types of experiences and you must have an open mind and if you are reading this chances are pretty solid that you do. I loved that his volunteer experience offered two weeks and was affordable as most volunteer experiences are expensive or you don't have enough time off to fulfill them.. This was great and if I could've stayed I would've, but had to get home for a prior engagement. To have the option to extend your stay is a great idea and is a big plus! The accomodation was really good and def added to my experience. The food was delicious and def. gave me a "real" experience of living in Peru.

After a few days I got used to my new environment and people, and i felt verry welcome. Working for waves for development realy felt like a great family of friends. The house is verry basic, but Don Tinoco and Dona Meche make sure you'll have everything you need. They are verry friendly people And you can alwais ask them for anything. What about the work.... I did'nt even feel like I was working. Nothing is better than seeing a kid smile when they just paddled and rode a wave.(you'll feel so proud of them)+ Holggers is a great surf instructor, and can also help you surf beter. English and environmental clases are also a lot of fun to participate in. The teachers are verry open for suggestions and learning or doing new things in their clases. Ofcourse the volunteers also have a great time outside of the project. Think about going to local trips together (The caves, or with a small local boat to the oil platforms) Tip: think about what kind of project or event you might...

Distinction between volunteerism and voluntourism; it would be beneficial if a potential WAVES participant could chose whether to do a volunteer program (greater than 4 weeks) or do a voluntourism program (2 weeks min)

This is a fantastic way not only to get surf on a fantastic secluded coast, but also to get to really understand the culture and people of a poor fishing town. You get to interact every day with the townspeople and learn about a way of life that is probably foreign to most.

Expect an encouraging experience with dedicated community leaders, working hard to improve education, increase awareness, and make a difference in the local community. It's a great atmosphere for teamwork and cooperation. There will be plenty of fun and laughter too. You'll also be able to surf, a lot.

This is a great stop off for people spending an extended time in South America. I only attended for 10 days and was devastated to leave so quickly - it was not enough time to get the full experience. The guys I met while there were embarking on a six month tour so they had the luxury of spending almost a month at camp. I think this is the better way to do it. However, I would not trade my experience for the world.
