Carbon Offset?

We recommend you make a donation to  The Converging World instead of carbon offsetting your trip.

We are working together to build a carbon calculator that will give a suggested donation for your trip.

Please also keep in mind that donations/offsets are by no means a replacement for taking meaningful steps to cut your carbon emissions in the first place. We have provided plenty of resources to help you do that.

Carbon offsetting is a complicated issue. You can read more from the links on the right.

We decided there had to be a muchbetter alternative to commercial offsetting programs out there, and if we could find one, we would back it. After plenty of searching, we found one! The Converging World are a UK charity building wind turbines in the developing world, and using the sales of electricity and its gold standard carbon credits to simply make more wind turbines, putting money into social development projects and develop awareness raising campaigns back home. Donating to these guys instead of buying offsets from a profit making company will make your money go so much further.

Use our carbon calculator to work out a suggested donation (coming soon).

Really want to offset?

Even if you choose to go and offset elsewhere, please do check it out first.

  • We recommend offsets that are certified to the Gold Standard, or at least the Voluntary Carbon Standard. Always use offset providers that have signed up to the ICROA Code of Best Practice.
  • Be wary of tree planting ‘offsets' and biofuel projects - these are notoriously problem ridden schemes.

We also thought that these guys at Carbon Retirement were a more direct and effective approach to the offsetting principle. However, they perhaps do not bring the social benefits eg. electricity to developing rural areas that our selected organisation The Converging World do.

If you have something useful to add, please tell us about it. We'll give you full credit.
