Low Carbon Travel: 'much better' than flying

Have you considered a rail, bus, car , bike or boat alternative for your flight? You will be amazed at how quick, easy, comfortable and cheap it can be. We were. Not to mention that the overland travel experience is far more exciting than sitting in a metal tin at 38000 feet.

We have a growing range of fantastic holidays, courses and accommodation in the UK and Europe, all accessible without jumping on a plane.

Still not convinced? Check out these great reasons to swap your jet plane for something more appealing.

Quality of experience. As the Guardian Green Travel Guide points out, all the best things happen slowly. Friendship, food and sex are not as good when they are over quickly. Why should travel be different? As we recently came to appreciate, go slower’ and you really will wonder how we all got so excited by flying.

Comfort and convenience. Your own bed on a sleeper train, plenty of space to explore on a ferry, coach seats that recline, your own car so you can stop where you want. You won't find any of that on a plane. Neither will you get close to your actual arrival or departure point, unless you are lucky. Avoid flying and you stand less chance of losing your luggage too.

Price. Book your train, ferry or coach ticket well in advance, or drive an efficient car with 4 people in it, and you will often save money. If you take an overnight journey you will also be saving a nights accommodation costs. There are no extra luggage charges and hidden taxes either.

Speed. By the time you have driven to the airport, checked in, got through security and had a dodgy sandwich in departures you could be halfway through France, tucking into a tasty baguette and sipping fresh coffee as you watch the fields flash by. You will be amazed how often a hi-speed train can rival a plane for total door to door journey time. And it is getting quicker.

The environment. If you don't do it for yourself, at least consider it for the sake of life as we know it. We had a good look into it, and came up with a rough guide to how relatively carbon friendly various modes of transport are. See it.
