Europe
Overview: Europe is a great place for ski tours of all length and technicality. Be it the Alps, Pyrenees or Jura, you will see people donning their skins from the first sign of snow, often getting out well before the lifts open. Late March, April and early May are the most popular times for longer ski tours. The weather is more reliable (and warm!), snow is better consolidated (in the mornings) and conditions on glaciated terrain are normally safer.
There is an extensive hut system that stretches right across the French, Italian, Swiss and Austrian Alps, making for some spectacular ski touring opportunities. They are a lot more comfortable than they sound, most being permanently manned during the season, and you will need to book ahead (see useful ski tour links for details). It is highly advisable to take a guide unless you are extremely experienced in high mountain navigation, safety and rescue.
Heli-dropping is banned in France, which means only the tourer can access the best there is to offer. Elsewhere, give the guys in the chopper a smug wave, knowing that your summit will taste so much sweeter.
The most famous ski tour in the Alps is the Haute Route, a high altitude hut to hut tour between Chamonix and Zermatt. There a number of variants to this route (see specifics) and people normally take their time to do it over 6-7 days.
The Pyrenees offers hundreds of easily accessible ski tours in stunning terrain, whether day touring from one base or hopping from village to village.
