Why ski touring?

Ski touring is a great way of keeping fit and exploring the mountains in a far more intimate, exhilarating form. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing you have earnt your turns! These ski tour trips will all help to prepare you for solo trips and even the long iconic routes, for example the Haute Route or Silvretta Route. They will give you a chance to interact with the area you ski through and hopefully experience it in a new way. Ski touring is also the best way to get fresh tracks in busy mountain areas. It gives you the opportunity to access areas of the mountains which other skiers just can't get to!

Where to go ski touring?

The most popular place to go ski touring from the UK is the Alps, although there are great ski touring opportunities in the Cairngorms in Scotland and in most other snowy, mountainous areas such as the Neretva Valley in Bosnia and Herzegovina!

Types of ski touring?

There are two main types of ski touring, day trips, which involve returning to the valley to sleep, and hut-to-hut tours which involve staying higher for longer and sleeping in mountain refuges and huts. There is also the distinction between Alpine style where your heel locks down for descents, and Telemark, where your heel is always unconnected and involves a different style of skiing on the descent.

What gear and kit is needed?

Like many such sports, ski touring can involve lots of expensive specialised kit, so when you start it can be a good idea to hire kit until you know it is definitely the sport for you. As a minimum you will need touring bindings, skins for your skis (to enable you to slide uphill) and avalanche safety equipment (transceiver, probe and shovel).
