Key Information

Day 1

Welcome to Sri Lanka

Jetwing Beach, Negombo.

Ayubowan! Your Sri Lankan journey begins in Negombo, a vibrant coastal town just a short drive from Bandaranaike International Airport. Upon arrival, your host will greet you and transfer you to Jetwing Blue, a contemporary beachfront hotel with excellent facilities — including two pools, a spa, and direct access to the Indian Ocean. It’s an ideal spot to rest and reset after your travels. Spend the afternoon relaxing at your own pace, and later meet your guide and fellow travellers for a welcome briefing. If time and energy allow, enjoy a gentle stroll along Negombo’s lively beach road for a glimpse of local life.

Day 2

Into the highlands of Kandy

Simpson's Forest Lodge. Kandy.

Hiking

2hrs · 2mi · 492ft up · 492ft down

Driving

3.5hrs

After a relaxed breakfast, you’ll begin your journey inland with a scenic drive to the cooler highlands of Kandy. Your base for the next three nights is Simpson’s Forest, a boutique heritage-style lodge tucked among tea estates and dense forest canopies, just outside Kandy. With panoramic views, characterful rooms, and a serene hill-country setting, it’s a peaceful retreat to unwind between daily adventures. This afternoon, stretch your legs on the lodge’s Mini Nature Trail – a gentle 2-hour hike which starts right at the lodge and meanders through lush evergreen forest, a spice plantation scented with cloves and pepper, and a working tea estate where you can observe (or join in) traditional tea plucking. Along the way, look out for wildflowers, butterflies, and native flora, and enjoy sweeping views over forested valleys from a quiet hilltop vantage point. Dinner is not included tonight, but you will dine à la carte at the hotel’s restaurant — a celebrated spot that blends Sri Lankan and international flavours with panoramic views of the surrounding misty mountains. Expect beautifully prepared seasonal dishes, an elegant atmosphere, and a memorable introduction to the region’s culinary richness.

Day 3

Hill-country culture & Tamil village hike

Tamil trekking sri lanka

Hiking

3hrs · 4mi · 492ft up · 492ft down

This morning set out on a guided Tamil village walk — a rewarding blend of gentle trekking and cultural immersion through the surrounding Meenawatte Estate. This 3–4 hour hike winds through tea and spice plantations, offering glimpses into daily life in Sri Lanka’s hill country. You’ll begin on a shaded trail of rolling terrain, passing clove trees, pepper vines, and tea bushes before reaching a nearby Tamil village tucked into the hills. Along the way, your local guide will share stories about the region’s agricultural traditions, Tamil heritage, and the rhythms of rural life, offering a deeper connection to the landscape and its people. While the route includes some gentle climbs and descents, the pace is leisurely to soak in the views. This afternoon head back to Simpson’s Forest to unwind — perhaps with a dip in the pool, a drink on the terrace, or a stroll through the lodge’s peaceful gardens. For those keen to explore a little more, you may choose to join your guide for an optional visit to Kandy’s city centre, around 45 minutes away. Soak up the heritage charm and lakeside setting, browse local shops and markets, or pay a visit to the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Sri Lanka, said to house a tooth of the Buddha himself.

Day 4

Hike at the foothills of the Knuckles Range

Simpson-s forest lodge pool

Hiking

4hrs · 6mi · 246ft up · 1542ft down

Driving

3hrs

After breakfast, you’ll set off on a memorable journey into the foothills of the Knuckles Mountain Range. Your day begins with a scenic 1-hour drive from Simpson’s Forest, followed by a 30-minute tuk tuk ride through winding hill roads to reach the trailhead — a picturesque start to a day rich in nature and cultural discovery. The trek leads you deep into remote and rural Sri Lanka, through forests scented with pine and cardamom, across tea and spice plantations, and along jungle trails beside gurgling streams and cascading waterfalls. As the landscape shifts, so too does your perspective — this is a chance to step into the rhythms of village life, observing farmers tending rice paddies with water buffalo, and children walking home from school along red earth paths. Along the way, you’ll stop in a local mountain home, where a warm welcome awaits. Watch or help prepare a traditional lunch over open fire, and share a simple but delicious meal with your hosts, often accompanied by fresh fruit from the garden. Return to the lodge in the afternoon with time to unwind — perhaps with a swim in the pool, a quiet drink on the veranda, or simply soaking up the views. Today is your final night in Kandy, as tomorrow you’ll set off early for one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic rail journeys through the highlands.

Day 5

Journey by train to Ella & settle into your wellness retreat

Kandy to Ella train, sri lanka.

Train Ride

5-7hrs

After breakfast, you’ll transfer to Kandy and board one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic train rides — the slow and soulful journey from Kandy to Ella. Watch as the landscape shifts from misty highlands and tea-covered slopes to cloud forests and cascading valleys. On arrival in Ella, you’ll continue by road to your base for the next two nights: Anasa Wellness, a serene hilltop retreat tucked away in the cloud-kissed forests above Bandarawela. Set among tea estates and jungle canopy, Anasa blends minimalist design with natural textures — think polished concrete, local stone, and warm timber. Rooms feature large windows and private terraces that open onto sweeping mountain views, and the spa and pool make it easy to switch into rest-and-recharge mode. This evening, you can choose to dine a la carte at the retreat’s restaurant, where nourishing Sri Lankan flavours meet clean, seasonal ingredients, many sourced from the surrounding gardens. Settle in and breathe deep — this is your time to unwind.

Day 6

Morning relaxation & sunset trail to Little Adam’s Peak

Yoga

1hr

Hiking

2-3hrs · 3mi · 656ft up · 656ft down

Enjoy a slow morning at Anasa Wellness, your serene boutique retreat nestled in the hills. Begin your day with an optional rejuvenating yoga session, followed by a nourishing breakfast. Take a dip in the pool with views of misty mountains, unwind at the spa, or simply relax on your balcony surrounded by birdsong and forest. The hotel’s focus on wellbeing and quiet luxury makes it a perfect base to reset before heading back out to explore. In the afternoon, you’ll transfer to the charming highland town of Ella, known for its lush scenery and laid-back vibe. First, stop at the Nine Arch Bridge, an iconic feat of colonial-era railway architecture, where you might catch a train chugging its way through the arches — a picture-perfect moment. Then it’s on to Little Adam’s Peak, one of the region’s most popular short hikes. The trail begins just outside Ella town and is clearly marked, with a gradual incline through tea plantations and small villages. It typically takes about 45–60 minutes to reach the summit, which sits at around 1,100 m above sea level. The effort is well worth it: at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over Ella Gap, surrounding mountains, and the far-reaching southern plains — especially striking at sunset, when the sky turns gold and pink. After your descent, enjoy a free evening in Ella, with time to explore the town’s vibrant café scene or try one of the local restaurants for dinner. Later, you’ll return to Anasa for a restful night.

Day 7

Into the wild: safari & luxury camping in Yala

Wildlife Tracking

2-3hrs

Driving

3hrs

After breakfast, journey from the highlands to the southeastern plains of Yala National Park. Your base for the night is Ceylon Wild Safaris — an exclusive tented camp tucked inside a private jungle corridor bordering Yala National Park. With just six stylish canvas suites, each featuring plunge pools, outdoor showers, and private verandas, the camp blends wild seclusion with refined touches and warm, personalised service. This afternoon, set out on a private jeep safari in Yala Block 5, known for its lower visitor numbers and rewarding wildlife sightings. Accompanied by a skilled naturalist guide, you’ll explore the area’s diverse habitats in search of elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, exotic birds — and, with luck, the elusive leopard. Return to camp at dusk for a relaxed evening under the stars. A surprise awaits — a special way to round off your day in the wild. Let the night sounds of the jungle lull you to sleep in your safari tent.

Day 8

Tracks, elephants, temples & the Indian Ocean

Mulkirigala Raja Maha Viharaya temple, Sri Lanka.

Hiking

3hrs · 3mi · 656ft up · 656ft down

Driving

3.5hrs

Rise early for a final bush walk with your naturalist guide — a quiet, intimate way to explore Yala’s wilderness on foot, spotting animal tracks, birds, and learning how to read the land. After breakfast, begin your journey south to the coast. En route, enjoy an authentic Sri Lanka buffet before stopping at the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, stop at the Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe, a government-run conservation centre that rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves and prepares them for life back in the wild. Unlike many elephant attractions in Sri Lanka, this centre prioritises ethical care — there’s no touching or performances. You will observe the young elephants during their scheduled feeding (usually around 2:30 pm), keeping human contact to a minimum to ensure a smooth reintegration into their natural habitat. Next, make a short detour to Mulkirigala Rock Temple, an often-overlooked gem steeped in history and spiritual depth. Climb a series of stone staircases to reach hidden cave shrines, centuries-old frescoes, and large reclining Buddha statues. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over the surrounding jungle and southern plains — a serene moment before heading to the coast. Arrive at Ananya Beach Hotel in the late afternoon, your base for the next three nights. This serene hideaway sits on a quiet beach near Tangalle and offers the perfect mix of barefoot comfort and modern style. The evening is free to unwind — swim in the pool, stroll along the shore, or relax as the sun sinks into the Indian Ocean.

Day 9

Free time in paradise and sunset kayaking

Tangalle beach, sri lanka

Kayaking

Lounge by the pool, take a stroll along the quiet beach, or simply relax in the comfort of Ananya Beach Resort — your boutique hideaway that balances barefoot comfort with warm Sri Lankan hospitality. As the day mellows, slip into a kayak and paddle out onto the calm waters of a nearby lagoon. Guided by a local paddler, glide silently through golden reflections and tangled mangroves. Watch for flashes of color as kingfishers dart by, spot monkeys foraging along the banks, and soak in the quiet magic of dusk settling over the water. It’s a serene and intimate way to wind down a day spent by the sea.

What is the food like?

Sri Lankan cuisine is a fascinating reflection of the island’s heritage: a fusion of fresh local produce with spices brought to the island over the centuries. Though Sri Lankan food has some similarities with South Indian cuisine, it remains distinctively unique. Contrasting flavours of coconut, chilli, curry leaves, cinnamon, and garlic dominate the main dishes as well as a variety of deep-fried tasty snacks. ‘Rice and curry’ is the Sri Lankan staple, which in reality means a huge variety of curries, dhal, and vegetable dishes, often served with roti-style flatbreads. There is also an abundance of fresh seafood and fish, usually cooked in curries with coconut and fresh herbs. Many hotel restaurants on this trip elevate traditional flavours with gourmet twists and thoughtfully curated à la carte menus, allowing you to pick your favourite dishes when meals are not included. Picnic lunches will be simple yet full of flavour, offering fresh, wholesome ingredients that reflect the local palate—perfect for enjoying the scenery without fuss.

Vegetarians, vegans, and most dietary requirements are well catered for; just speak to your host upon booking.

Tucked away in the misty highlands above Bandarawela, Anasa Wellness Resort is your peaceful escape from the bustle of Ella. You’ll spend two nights here soaking up calm and comfort, surrounded by tea estates, jungle canopy, and fresh mountain air. The resort blends modern design with natural textures — think polished concrete, warm timber, and floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto sweeping valley views. The twin-share rooms are bright, spacious, and thoughtfully designed for rest and recharge, with private terraces and all the comforts. Wellness is at the heart of the experience: unwind with a massage in the full-service spa, dip into hydrotherapy pools, or stretch out in the yoga pavilion. There’s also a modern gym, squash and tennis courts, and plenty of quiet corners for reading or reflection. Dining is a highlight. At Alwan restaurant, nourishing Sri Lankan dishes are given a refined, contemporary twist, while the Mezze Bar serves up fresh juices, smoothies, and light bites throughout the day.

Ceylon Wild Safaris: Boutique Luxury in Yala Leopard Country

Ceylon Wild Safaris is deeply committed to sustainable tourism and habitat protection, so your stay also directly supports local conservation efforts. A truly wild yet comfortable night in one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic wildlife zones.

Ananya Beach Resort: Barefoot Bliss by the Indian Ocean

Spend your final three nights of the trip at Ananya Beach Resort, a peaceful, comfortable escape tucked along a pristine stretch of Sri Lanka’s south coast near Tangalle. Ananya blends barefoot beach living with thoughtful comfort. Spacious, simply decorated air-conditioned rooms open onto lush gardens or ocean views, while the resort’s minimalist design flows into shaded lounge areas and a serene infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean. The vibe is intentionally low-key and peaceful – perfect if you’re after quiet seclusion far from the crowds. There’s a small spa offering Ayurvedic treatments, and the open-air restaurant serves nourishing Sri Lankan-inspired dishes using local ingredients.

Upgrades

Solo travellers seeking their own space can opt for a private room for an additional charge — see Optional Extras for pricing and request this when booking. Please note that due to the small size of some of the properties, availability is limited and the private room option is only available for nine nights of the trip. At Ceylon Wild Safaris, accommodation will be in twin-share tents only, as the intimate camp setup does not allow for single occupancy.

This trip has been rated as Easy

This trip is designed for travellers with average to good fitness who enjoy a balance of gentle adventure and relaxation. The activities are generally easy to moderate. Hiking involves easy to moderate walks lasting between 2 to 4 hours on varied but manageable terrain such as forest trails, rolling hills, and rural paths. You’ll only need to carry a small daypack with essentials like water, snacks, sunscreen, and a camera. No previous yoga or surfing experience is required, as these sessions are tailored for beginners and optional. Travel includes three longer drives of up to 4 hours and a scenic train journey lasting 5-6 hours, all providing plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy Sri Lanka’s breathtaking landscapes. Most days avoid early starts, giving you a chance to wake up slowly and enjoy breakfast at your own pace. While the distances and pace are generally leisurely, please note that Sri Lanka’s tropical heat and humidity can sometimes make activities feel more intense than expected. Staying hydrated and pacing yourself will help you enjoy every experience comfortably. The itinerary also includes downtime to unwind in premium accommodations—whether relaxing by infinity pools, spa treatments, wandering nearby villages, or simply soaking up the tranquil natural surroundings. This balance of activity and leisure makes the trip suitable for those looking to explore Sri Lanka’s diverse beauty without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. A spirit of adventure and flexibility will enhance your experience, especially during wildlife excursions and local village visits, but overall this trip offers a comfortable and authentic way to connect with the country’s culture, nature, and beaches.

What if i need to skip an activity?

If you've never tried surfing or yoga, we recommend giving these a go, as tuition will be tailored to first-timers. However, we appreciate that yoga and surfing are not for everyone so if you prefer to opt-out from these activities, it's absolutely fine – you can just enjoy some extra leisure time in the jungle or on the tropical beaches.

What will I need to carry?

During the activities, you'll only need to carry a personal day rucksack with your essential items. Your main luggage will be transported or stored for you.

This trip is generally scheduled to run between December and July - generally favourable times to explore the Central Highlands, Yala National Park, and Sri Lanka’s south coast.

February to April typically offers dry, sunny conditions across all regions. May and June fall within the southwest monsoon season, which can bring occasional rain, especially in the highlands and along the coast — but these are often short-lived showers rather than all-day downpours. Yala and the southeast are usually drier even at this time of year. December marks the start of the dry season again and is a popular time to visit.

Expect warm coastal temperatures of 25–30°C and cooler conditions in the highlands (around 15–20°C). As Sri Lanka’s weather patterns have become less predictable in recent years, it’s best to be prepared for a bit of everything — sunshine, humidity, and possibly the odd tropical downpour. Lightweight waterproofs are strongly recommended.

This trip is brand new

We’re still waiting to collect any reviews from other travellers on this trip. However, all our hosts go through an extensive vetting process to ensure that your adventure is awesome.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 520kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Tap water in Sri Lanka isn’t always gentle on the stomach. Filtered water is provided at hotels and on the bus, so it’s a good idea to bring a reusable water bottle to refill each morning.

Your main luggage will be stored securely on the bus when you're on the move and you'll have access to it on a daily basisI f there's anything that you don't need with you during the tour you can also store excess luggage at your local host's office in Colombo. During the activities, you'll only need to carry a personal day rucksack with your essential items.

You’ll experience authentic village life, meet friendly locals, and observe traditional farming firsthand. The visits are respectful and immersive, with opportunities to engage in daily activities, offering a genuine cultural connection away from typical tourist paths.

The Elephant Transit Home is a government-run rescue and rehabilitation center for orphaned elephant calves. It prioritizes ethical care — no riding, touching, or performances. Visitors observe scheduled feedings from a distance, supporting the calves’ smooth transition back to the wild.

Yala Block 5 is known for its rich biodiversity and low visitor numbers — ideal for spotting elephants, mugger crocodiles, sloth bears, and, with luck, Sri Lanka’s elusive leopards. Ceylon Wild Safaris is a low-impact, conservation-minded camp. It runs on solar power, avoids plastic waste, employs expert local naturalists, and contributes to community and habitat preservation projects, ensuring wildlife encounters are both responsible and enriching. Your park permit fees are included in the trip price and a portion of the entrance fees goes directly to the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) for the upkeep and conservation of Yala National Park. These funds are used for maintaining the park's infrastructure, protecting wildlife, and supporting conservation programs.

Marta Marinelli, raised in Italy’s serene Prosecco Hills, dreamt of global adventures, inspired by her father's travel stories. Her passion evolved into a career, backed by a decade of studies including degrees in international tourism and destination management. She’s worked in the adventure travel sector since 2012, living in Italy, the UK, and now sunny Portugal.

Over twenty years, Marta has explored over 55 countries, visiting remote areas like Ghana, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Haiti and Nepal’s Upper Mustang region. As a Senior Adventure Expansion Manager at Much Better Adventures, she focuses on creating life-changing experiences, ranging from multi-activity adventures, challenging treks to ultimate adventures in iconic places. She loves the challenge of finding the best local adventure hosts around the world, collaborating on adventures that offer genuine immersion, pushing beyond the beaten path and working on exclusive itineraries that challenge your comfort zone.

What makes her tick? Enabling people to live adventure-rich lives while positively impacting and empowering local communities around the world, generating sustainable opportunities for both the host, guides, community, and the environment.

This trip takes place in environments where wild animals are present in their natural habitat, where protections and controls on their movement may be limited or non-existent. Some species may be dangerous, venomous, or unpredictable. Sightings are a privilege, but safety is key. Always follow your guide’s instructions and any posted signage.

We recommend considering your comfort around wildlife and discussing any concerns with your host before travel, particularly if you have allergies, phobias, or related health conditions.

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.

Before traveling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns, especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.

For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
