On a still morning, Lake Pokhara kicks up a picture-perfect reflection of the cutting peaks of the Annapurna and Manaslu massifs in the background.

But there’s much more to the Pokhara Valley than the chilled-out haven found on the banks of its famous lake. Many start the Annapurna Circuit and Mardi Himal base camp treks from Pokhara, but less ambitious trekkers should consider the shorter, lower altitude but equally stunning Royal Trail trek (getting its name from Prince Charles’s sojourn in the early eighties).

Similarly, the undemanding Phewa Lake Circuit offers glorious views of the surrounding 8,000-metre plus Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu mountain ranges, without the risk of blisters or altitude sickness.

Pokhara is also home to a burgeoning extreme sports industry. Not only considered one of the best paragliding locations in the world, Pokhara’s white-water river system draw thrill-seekers all-year-round.
