Accommodation

Rieumes is a beautifully restored 15th century country house tucked away in the heart of South West France. At the head of the Latou valley, just 50km south of Toulouse and west of Carcassonne, it has spectacular views across rolling hills of the Ariège and the medieval village of St Martin d’Oydes.

The house is packed with charm and historical detail, while also providing all the modern facilities you would want from a holiday home. The outdoor space is very private with leafy shade from the established fruit and nut trees. You have exclusive use of the cabana and spacious poolside area that leads on to the swimming pool. The cabana is a lovely escape from the sun and in the evenings it is a perfect vantage point for the magnificent sunsets.

Rieumes is an ideal place for families to gather; it is very peaceful and is in a gorgeous setting. With marked footpaths from the end of the drive and panoramic views it is tempting not to venture far, particularly in the summer. But positioned as it is beside the Pyrenees with all its cycling, hiking and winter skiing, surrounded by Cathar castles, and on the edge of the Languedoc Roussillon, this region offers something for everyone; it is hard to imagine a better place for a family holiday.

The main atrium hallway with an oak staircase leads up to the first and second floor. There is a modern, open plan kitchen and dining area leading to an 80sq.m sitting room with natural stone floors throughout. It is a wonderfully light space, yet a cool and comfortable retreat during the summer.

Kitchen/dining room: The 60sq.m open plan kitchen is well equipped with an electric hob and fan oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine.

Salon: The vast living space, with its stone floors and abundance of natural light pouring in from both sides of the house, is a glorious place to spend time. For all its light it remains beautifully cool in the summer and a French stone fireplace warms the room on cooler evenings. Double doors lead out onto the pool area. There is plenty of seating, a satellite TV and DVD player, a small library of books and a ping pong table that can be moved outside beside the pool. Wi-Fi is also available.

Hall: An atrium hallway with an oak staircase leads to the first and second floor. It has exposed beams or ‘colombage’ which extends all the way up the inside of the house. There is a piano and a downstairs loo under the stairs.

First Floor: Sleeps 10

  • 3 double bedrooms with king sized beds and en-suite bathrooms
  • 1 twin room with en-suite bathroom
  • 1 twin without a bathroom (ideal for small children sharing a bathroom with parents)

Second Floor: Sleeps 6

A huge open plan ‘dormitory style’ bedroom and bathroom with separate loo. The room has a freestanding bath, a wash basin and 6 single beds including antique ‘bateau lits’. This area is ideal for children and teenagers.

The swimming pool (10x5m) and the cabana look out across the Latou valley and its gentle rolling hills; it is a wonderfully peaceful and relaxing place to be. There is lots of space around the pool with sun loungers and deck chairs and a big parasol for extra shade beside the pool. During the day the cabana is a shady retreat from the sun and in the evenings it is the perfect spot to enjoy a chilled glass of rosé while watching the setting sun. The cabana also has an open fireplace which can be lit on cooler evenings making it a great place for eating al fresco. There is a separate BBQ for cooking.
