Active Vacances is an ideal base to explore the foothills of the Pyrénées by bike. Traffic is light and the peaceful roads are ideal for enjoying the picturesque scenery. There are a multitude of routes to choose, from long, flat river valleys, gentle rolling hills to steep little used Pyrénéen mountain roads as well as the classic Tour de France climbs.

On your arrival you will be met by the owners, Paul and Kate, who will be on hand to help you enjoy your holiday. Paul is a veteran of over 20 years in international triathlon, also competing in diverse cycling events such as the Haute Route Triple Crown, Etape du Tour, the Marmotte, the Trans-Rockies mountain bike race. For 22 years he was a qualified osteopath specialising in sports injuries gathering a wealth of experience working at events including the World Student Games, the 1997 Everest Marathon and the Commonwealth Games along with treating professional and keen amateur sports people. He is available to offer help and advice on injuries with sports therapy and massage as optional extras. There are many cyclo-sportives in the local area and if you want to take part in one of these we can advise. Over the past 8 years we have built up a good local knowledge of the many bike routes in our area and are happy to help you with self-guided rides. We are also happy to help you arrange days out and bookings for other activities.

Active Vacances is a perfect venue for all your cycling needs, whether you are beginner, intermediate or advanced level - doing it just for fun or to achieve a challenging target for a key race.

You can come along with a group of friends from your local club & with your own coach, with your family.

All four bedrooms over-look the large, private garden, and are light, airy and comfortable furnished in a contemporary style with oak doors and floors. The king-sized double beds and full-sized single beds have crisp white Egyptian cotton bedlinen and goose down duvets. Each room has its own bathroom with a walk-in shower, luxury towels and French toiletries.

The well-equipped kitchen has an American fridge/freezer with ice-maker and filtered water, electric oven, induction hob, micro-wave and dishwasher. French windows lead from the kitchen into the garden where meals can be taken al fresco around the large dining table and in the dappled shade of the old trees. For lovers of outdoor cooking there is also a barbecue.

Leading from the kitchen is a large dining room with two comfy sofas for relaxing and chatting before or after your meal. Through from the dining room is a cosy sitting room with log-burning stove, CD player, satellite TV and a selection of DVD’s, CD’s, books, magazines and board games to keep you entertained indoors. Outdoors you can try your hand at boules and pelote at the fronton in the neighbouring village or a game of tennis in our village.

For your convenience there is a secure bike store and workshop, a laundry room and ground-floor shower and toilet.

The immediate vicinity of the gîte offers a wealth of opportunities both for the active and adventurous as well as those who prefer a more relaxed approach to their vacation. Virtually on our doorstep are waymarked woodland trails that are ideal for walking, running, mountain biking and horse-riding. Quiet, well-surfaced roads radiate in every direction, perfect for cycling through the rolling foothills of the Pyrénées or to the more famous Tour de France mountain climbs. Ski stations or surf beaches can be reached by car within the hour.

The nearby town of Navarrenx boasts a world famous salmon-fishing river, as well as providing the starting point for canoeing and rafting trips. For those who prefer “blue sky thinking” and seeing the bigger picture there’s no better way of clearing the mind than seeing the country-side spreading out below you from a hot air balloon trip or micro-lighting. And then of course there is the gîte’s own large private garden and 25 metre long, heated swimming pool. With so much to do and see, we have endeavoured to provide our guests with a high level of accommodation with every comfort taken care of to leave them refreshed and revitalised and ready for the next days adventures – activated and regenerated!

Béarn des Gaves

The Béarn des Gaves region is an area situated mid-way between Pau and Biarritz being close to both sea and mountains giving a temperate maritime climate, wooded hillsides and a river valley rich in natural and historic resources such as the special regional cuisine and vineyards of the Basque and Béarn. It is a region of contrasts, each of the cantons, Navarrenx, Orthez, Salies-de-Béarn & Sauveterre-de-Béarn show their regional diversities.

Our closest town, it lays claim to being the first Bastide (walled city) in France, displaying a well-preserved example of the military architecture of the 14th Century. Capital of salmon fishing, a top spot for white-water sports and outings with a pottok (small Basque pony) or on a mountain bike, and also a stop-over town on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela, Navarrenx boasts art galleries, pavement cafes and restaurants, a twice weekly market and historic rampart walks – plenty to attract a visitor to while away a relaxed day or afternoon in the town
