You may ask what are the extra sessions the pros do to improve their performance? One is REST and the others are Neurophysiology training sessions and bike set up. What do we mean by neurophysiology? In endurance sports efficiency and weight are the key elements to a great performance. This means you must perfect your technique and your aerodynamics when cycling, so you go as fast as possible with less effort. Becoming faster, stronger and more efficient does not necessarily mean you need to build muscle. The main thing is to make the muscle as effective and efficient as possible. Your central nervous system controls how you coordinate a particular movement. So by strengthening these pathways your movements will become more efficient. The exercises are simple but effective and we have seen huge gains even in athletes at the top of their profession.

Fiona Smart PhD. Fiona gained her PhD. at Cambridge University, in the UK. Following her PhD she went to TSRI, La Jolla USA, to research synaptic plasticity for 6 years. With a thorough understanding in the body’s physiology and also with her speciality in neurophysiology this enables her to have a more scientific approach to the coaching of cycling and triathlon. Fiona is a qualified sports massage and sports injury therapist. She also specialises in strength and conditioning using plyometrics, balance and agility, body weight training and breathing techniques to enable people to become more effective athletes. Fiona started skiing at 18 months, enjoying downhill ski racing for a number of years. She has been involved in one sporting activity or other since then. As well as being a competitive county runner Fiona has excelled in triathlon and duathlon. She now concentrates on longer distance events and has raced in several Half-Ironman and Ironman events. Fiona coaches both professional cyclists and triathletes, as well as beginners and age group athletes. For her it is important to help everyone reach their potential. Fiona is also a qualified first-aider.

Gareth Speechley. Gareth started running at age 11 and after an injury moved to cycle racing at 16. He has raced throughout Europe, Australia and the USA on the road, the velodrome and in mountain bike events. He has represented his country in duathlon and triathlon at age group level. Gareth is an expert cycling coach, bike set up guru, a Level 2 Triathlon Coach and a qualified first-aider.

On site there is a 25m swimming pool, gymnasium, sauna, laundry room, and terraces and patios for your relaxation. WIFI is freely available. Soap and shampoo are provided for you. Eco hairdryers are also provided and we have hair straighteners and curlers if required.

We offer Apple TVs or Kindle Fires so you can keep up with current events and relax in your rooms. These need to be pre-booked. When the Olympics or the TDF or other events are televised we set up a large TV in the lounge area so everyone can enjoy the events together.

The Hotel has underfloor heating and a large wood burning stove in the lounge, as the nights can still be cool in February and March. There are fans in every room and the Hotel stays cool in the Summer due to the huge stone walls, wooden window shutters and thick insulation.

There are also many other rooms for relaxing and reading in after training, including the high terrace with amazing views over the Volcanic national park, a media room in an ancient barrel vault, the lounge next to the dining room. We have a few hammocks set up around the grounds and sun loungers in the pool area. We have a large variety of books for you to enjoy and games such as chess, table tennis etc.

Tea and coffee is freely available at any time in the dining room, so after training you can come in and relax and chat about your day with the other guests.

The apartments range in size for 2 - 16 people, depending on the apartment. They have all the mod cons, including AC and there is a bar, pool and BBQ area on site.
