Grand Tour du Sud

An epic circuit of 1000km through the southern Alps. 8 days of mountains, gorges, lakes and sea that will see us climb over 22000m.

Who is this trip aimed at?

This trip is a big challenge and will suit more experienced riders. Each day will be an average of 125km and between 2500m and 3000m of climbing.

Experience of long alpine climbs is desirable for anyone embarking on this trip. As always, please contact us to discuss whether this trip will work for you and your riding level.

VAM rating

Riders on this trip should be able to climb at a rate of at least 850 metres/hour for sustained periods.


Saturday June 25

  • Pick up from Geneva airport (aim to arrive between 11am and 3pm).
  • Minibus to our base near Bourg St Maurice.
  • Plenty of time to build up bikes, dinner and briefing.

Sunday June 26: Bellentre to Valloire - 127km - 3250m climbing.

  • Col de la Madeleine is our first big challenge of the trip followed by the Col du Telegraph.

Monday June 27: Valloire to Jausiers - 125km - 2700m climbing.

  • Straight into the action as we scale the Col du Galibier in the morning followed by a magnifecent descent to Briancon.
  • Great valley riding follows before we tackle the Col de Vars.

Tuesday June 28: Jausiers to Cote d’Azur - 155km - 3200m climbing

  • The Cimes de Bonette, the highest paved road in the alps at 2802m, will keep us busy in the morning.
  • After a superb, long descent we’ll make our way to the coast but not without more challenges on the way.

Wednesday June 29: Cote d’Azur - Cote d’Azur

  • 2 nights near the coast means a flexible day.
  • Join your guides for some fantastic riding including a visit to the beachfront for a dip in the Med followed by the Col d’Eze.
  • Although technically a ‘rest’ day we’ll still manage 75km and 1400m of climbing if you decide to join us!

Thursday June 30: Cote d’Azur to Colmar - 130km - 3200m climbing

  • We head north deep into the Alps again taking in beautiful climbs like the Col de Couillole and the Col des Champs.

Friday July 1: Colmar to Guillestre - 124km - 2200m climbing

  • The Col d’Allos is our first challeng of the day, followed by a spectactular cliff hugging descent to Barcelonnette.
  • Some fast valley riding takes us past the beautiful Lac du Serre Poncon.

Saturday July 2: Guillestre - Susa (Italy) - 120km - 2400m climbing

  • The magnificent Col d’Izoard is our morning challenge followed by a long descent to Briancon.
  • Then we’ll head to the Col de l’Echelle before a fast, flat affternoon into Italy to spend the night in Susa.

Sunday July 3: Susa (Italy) to Bellentre - 130km - 3200m climbing

  • A big day to finish with 2 giant cols to deal with.
  • The Col du Mont Cenis will take us back into France followed by the Col de l’Iseran at 2770m, the second highest col in the Alps.

Monday July 4

  • We’ll head to Geneva airport at around 1000 with a view to catching flights home from 1400 onwards.

  • Transfers from and to Geneva airport
  • 9 nights half board accommodation (twin share) 2 nights in our chalet base, the other 7 in comfortable hotels
  • 8 day of guided riding with full vehicle support
  • Energy drink powder, bananas, pastries in the vehicle
  • Max group size of 12 accompanied by 2 guides/coaches plus full time driver
