Itinerary Trans Pyrenees 2016 and Mont Ventoux

Day 1: July 23 - Arrival

Pick up at at Biarritz Airport and transfer to your hotel in the quiet little Basque village of Sare next to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, just South of Biarritz. Get some rest to get ready for your great, unforgettable ride across one of the most beautiful parts of France: “the mighty Pyrenees”.

Welcome drinks at the main square Sare near Saint-Jean-de-Luz followed by dinner in an excellent local restaurant. Dinner is included.

Day 2: July 24 - 52k + 1,135m

After breakfast you start with your first cycling day! We’ll soon leave the pleasant sea village of Sare behind us. Soon you will ride into Spanish territory (region of Navarra) over Col de St Ignace, a fairly easy climb just 3.5 km long a perfect as a warm-up ride.

Our second climb to Spain’s Puerto de Otxondo will be a bit tougher, +602m and 9.5k long. After the Oxtondo we head back into France over the most beautiful climb called: Col d’Ispeguy (672 m). The views are incredible on the descent into St Etienne de Baigorry.

Your final destination will be the ancient Pyrenean village of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

Climbs: Col de St Ignace, Puerto de Otxondo and Col d’Ispeguy.

Day 3: July 25 - 119k + 2,350m

The first climbs to Col des Gamia and Col d’Osquich, will give you the taste of the real beauty of the Pyrenees. You will face Col du Marie Blanque. The ascent of the Marie Blanque isn’t an easy one, especially the last 4 kilometres will be hard. From here you continue to your hotel located on the way up to Col d’Aubisque.

Climbs: Col de Marie Blanque, Col des Palombieres and Col d’Osquich.

Hotel location: Eaux-Bonnes, Hotel Richelieu. Dinner included.

Day 4: July 26 - 54k + 1,150m

The Col d’Aubisque is a legendary Tour peak added in 1910. The Tour de France hosted the Aubisque more than 60 times. The mountain summit has been conquered by great climbers.

Col d’ Aubisque culminates on 1.709 meters (5.605 feet), progresses for 16.5 kilometres with an average grade of 7.1 per cent rising 1.190 meters. You will start the ride from our Hotel in Eaux-Bonnes, about 8 km from the ski resort of Gourette.

Once we’ve reached the top, the 20 km descent towards the village Argeles-Gazost is incredibly beautiful, especially the first part to the Col du Soulor where the road runs along cliffs in the Cirque du Litor and there are two short, narrow tunnels.

Climbs: Col d’Aubisque and Col du Soulor.

Day 5: July 27 - 77k + 1,520m

You will stay an extra night in the quiet Pyrenean village of Argeles-Gazost . That gives you the chance to get organised and have some extra time to wash your jerseys and bibs. Today you will climb to the top of the French ski station: Hautacam.

You step on your bike In front of your hotel. You ride towards Argelès Gazost and here starts the real climb. The Hautacam ascent is 17 km long; over this distance, we will climb 1.170 meters and the top is 1.520 meter. In the afternoon you will visit the pilgrim’s town of Lourdes.

Day 6: July 28 - 88k + 2,650m

Today you will face our “Queen Stage”. After 12 kilometres you’ll reach Luz-Saint-Sauveur. Left you climb the Tourmalet and the road to the right takes you to the ski station of Luz Ardiden. You turn left and up towards the legendary Col du Tourmalet: first included in the TDF in 1910 and was nicknamed “Circle of death”.

This Pyrenees super climb is where the legendary rider Octave Lapize called race officials “assassins” as he negotiated the mountain in its Tour debut. At the peak of the Tourmalet, a monument honours race founder Henri Desgrange.

You will then continue and climb to the Payolle plateau and finally the spectacular Hourquette d’Ancizan! This climb is truly beautiful even though not very well known. We will finally ride to our comfortable Hotel in Saint-Lary-Soulan through a very quiet country road. The gentle climb up the Col d’Aspin is 13km long (7 km to reach the Payolle plateau).

Day 7: July 29 - Rest Day

Today is a rest day in Saint-Lary-Soulan. Enjoy the spa facilities of hotel Mercuresensoria.

Day 8: July 30 - 46k + 950m

Today is an easy stage. The ride just includes the Col de Peyresourde. Bagneres-de-Luchon is a pretty good size village with many shops and you will have the chance to wash your cycling clothes with few Euros in one of the many “laveries automatique”.

Climbs: Col de Peyresourde

Hotel location: Bagneres-de-Luchon, Hotel Etigny.

Day 9: July 31 - 81k + 1,500m

Today’s ride will include two really beautiful but rather difficult climbs right in succession: the Col de Menté and the Col de Portet d’Aspet. Especially the second Col will engage you particularly with a couple of steep sections.

Hotel location: St-Girons Hotel Ariege hotel-eychenne.

Day 10: August 01 - 142k + 1850m

The climbs of today are less famous but still challenging, starting with Col de la Crouzette up to Sommet de Portel, Col de Py and Col del Teil. Overnight at a beautiful medieval castle turned into a Resort/Hotel.

Climbs: Col de la Crouzette, Sommet de Portel, Col de Py, Col del Teil and Col du Portel.

Hotel location: Couiza, Hotel Chateau de Ducs. Dinner (in the castle) is included

Day 11: August 02 - 152k + 3,400m

The top climbs of today: the Col du Portel, Col de Coudons, Col des Sept Freres, Col de Chioula, Port de Pailheres and over the Col de Jau to the thermal town of Molitg-les-Bains.

Day 12: August 03 - 69k + 1,100m

Via the village of Vinca, over the Col Palomere and the Col Xatard finishing in Amelie-les-Bains. Van to Collioure

Climbs: Col Palomere and the Col Xatard

Day 13: August 04 - Transfer Day

Morning transfer to Bedoin which will take about 4 hours. Afternoon free or optional light ride.

Hotel La Garance.

Day 14: August 05 - Mont Ventoux! - 44k + 1650m

Cycle the Mont-Ventoux and expect a hard day in the saddle; if you like climbing, this will be your day where you will face the huge beast “The Mont-Ventoux”.

Today’s ride starts again in Bédoin in front of your hotel. Here begins the challenge! The most famous ascent to the Mont-Ventoux. After breakfast we ‘ll climb this big challenger with its top on 1912 meters (6273 feet).

You will follow the cycle path of all the greatest riders in the Tour de France…..come on you can do it! After the 22 kilometres climb you’ll reach the summit of “Mont-Ventoux”. Relax on top and prepare yourself for a very spectacular descent to the villages of Malaucène.

From here its only 12 kilometres back to Bédoin.

Day 15: August 06 - Departure Day

Departure day…..Time to say goodbye, a good flight back home or a pleasant stay in France. Transfers will be made by the tour guide to Marseille airport.


You will be staying in the following hotels:

Hotel Arraya

This hotel is located on the village square in Sare, 13 km from Saint-Jean-de-Luz and its beaches. It offers rooms distributed between 3 traditional 16th-century houses and free Wi-Fi. Each guest room at the Arraya is individually decorated and features a TV with satellite channels and a private bathroom. Some rooms open onto the garden and some have views of the village square. The Arraya’s gastronomic restaurant serves regional cuisine accompanied by an extensive wine list. Guests can relax on the terrace, which overlooks the Place de Sare or in the flower-filled garden.

Hôtel des Pyrénées

Hôtel des Pyrénées is a former coaching inn, set just 400 m from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port’s citadel. This 4-star hotel offers an outdoor swimming pool, an on-site restaurant and free Wi-Fi access. The guest rooms are decorated in a contemporary style and feature an LCD TV with Canal+ satellite channels. With mountain views from each one, they also provide air conditioning, bathrobes and slippers. A continental breakfast is served every morning, which can be enjoyed in guest rooms or on the terrace. You may also choose to sample regional cuisine or a set menu in the restaurant at Hôtel des Pyrénées. Private parking is available with an extra cost and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port Train Station is a 10-minute walk away. As well as walking in the surrounding countryside, you may also drive the 10 km to the Spanish border.

Hôtel Richelieu

Offering a restaurant, a bar and a tennis court, Hôtel Richelieu is located in Eaux-Bonnes. Free WiFi access is available, as well as a terrace. At Hôtel Richelieu, each room here will provide you with a TV, mountain views and a private bathroom with free toiletries. Other facilities offered at the property include ski storage. An array of activities can be enjoyed on site or in the surroundings, including skiing, cycling and hiking. Pau is 45 km from the hotel and the property offers free parking.

Logis Hôtel Le Miramont

This 3-star hotel is set in a tree-lined garden in the mountains of the Pyrénées National Park, a 2-minute walk from the spa centres. Guests have access to free Wi-Fi internet throughout the hotel and you can relax on the hotel’s terrace. A flat-screen TV with satellite channels features in each of the guest rooms. Some open up to private balconies, and they are all equipped with a minibar and telephone. A hairdryer is provided in the en suite bathrooms. Traditional cuisine prepared with local products is proposed in the on-site restaurant, Des Petits Pois Sont Rouges. Special diet menus are available upon request. Free private parking is possible on site and both the city of Lourdes and Hautacam ski resort are 14 km away. The hotel is set on the famous Tour de France route, 25 minutes’ drive from the Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport.

Mercure Sensoria de Saint-Lary-Soulan

This Mercure has an indoor pool set in a mountainside garden in the Pyrenees. It is located in the thermal and ski resort of Saint-Lary-Soulan. Each of the Mercure Sensoria de Saint Lary’s guestrooms have modern décor and offer views of the mountains or spa garden. They are all equipped with en suite facilities, satellite TV and a Wi-Fi internet connection. On site facilities include a sauna, hot tub, a fitness centre, tanning salon, a spa bath and a hammam. Massages are also available as well as thermal spa treatments. The Mercure’s restaurant, La Mangeoire, serves traditional and international cuisine. It offers a la carte dining, international buffets and meals can be enjoyed on the hotel panoramic terrace. Guests of Sensoria de Saint Lary can enjoy access to one of the largest ski resorts in the Pyrenees in winter. In summer guests can enjoy hiking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities.

Hôtel d’Etigny

This 19th-century neo-classical mansion is located in Bagneres de Luchon, in front of Luchon Thermal spa. It offers a large private shaded park with a furnished terrace, a swimming pool and grand lounges. From June 2016, enjoy a heated outdoor swimming pool. Each soundproofed and spacious room at the Hotel d’Etigny is in a classic décor. The rooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi access, a TV and a private bathroom. Some rooms have a flat-screen TV. A buffet breakfast is offered in the air-conditioned restaurant, or you can have breakfast continental-style in the comfort of your guest room. Gourmet French cuisine and drinks from the bar can be served on the terrace. Hotel d’Etigny has a 24-hour front desk with concierge service. Private parking in garages is possible with an extra cost. Activities in the nearby area include cycling, fishing and hiking.

Château Des Ducs De Joyeuse

The Ducs de Joyeuse Castle is located in the heart of the Cathare region. This listed 16th-century castle is located on extensive grounds on the banks of the River Aude. Each room has a classic decor and is equipped with satellite TV and a private spacious private bathroom. Guests can enjoy a meal in the chic restaurant or out in the lush courtyard. Enjoy the swimming pool and tennis court or guests can visit Cathares and many cathedrals and historical monuments.

Le Grand Hôtel

The Grand Hôtel is an old and elegant building, located in the heart of a Mediterranean tropical park, in front of the great Pic du Canigou, 45 kms from Perpignan. You will stay in one of the 34 comfortable rooms and suites. For sure, you will spend a refined and peaceful moment. The bathrooms are equipped with a large Italian shower or a beautiful bath. Some of the rooms and suites have a balcony. Breakfast can be served in your room at an additional charge. You could access directly to the Baths thanks to an elevator. Moreover, lots of other facilities are at your disposal: bar, restaurant, swimming pool, tennis court, car parks and a beauty salon.

Relais du Silence Casa Païral

Situated 250 m from Collioure beach and port, Casa Païral features an exotic floral garden and a heated outdoor swimming pool. The hotel is located in a 19th century Catalan building in the old quarter of Collioure. The Casa Païral offers air-conditioned rooms with a traditional décor. They each have a flat-screen TV with satellite channels and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms overlook the city or the hotel’s courtyard with a fountain or the village square. A buffet breakfast is served daily in Casa Païral’s breakfast room, or in guests’ rooms upon request. Drinks are served in the hotel’s garden area. The hotel’s reception is open 24 hours a day. Additional services available include free newspapers and a safety deposit box. Collioure Train Station is 500 m away. The hotel is located 23 km from the Spanish border.

La Garance

a Garance is located in Sainte-Colombe, in the heart of Provence, just 4 km from Bédoin. The hotel is set in a restored farmhouse surrounded by vineyards and olive trees and has a view on Mont Ventoux. It offers an outdoor swimming pool and free Wi-Fi access. The guest rooms at La Garance include a flat-screen TV, a work desk and a wardrobe. Each room also includes a private bathroom fitted with a bath or a shower and free toiletries. A buffet breakfast with mainly organic products can be enjoyed in the breakfast room or on the terrace on sunny mornings. Provencal cuisine is served in the restaurant La Colombe next to the hotel. The adventure starts in the quiet little sea village of Saint-Jean-de-Luz just South of Biarritz. From the foothills of the Pyrenees in Saint-Jean de Luz you start with a warm up before tackling some of the most (in) famous and legendary Pyrenees climbs. Col du Tourmalet, Col d’Aspin, Col de Peyresourde, Col d’Aubisque, Col du Marie Blanque, Col du Portret d’Aspet, Hautacam and last but not least Col du Mont-Ventoux. You will cycle over quite country side roads through typical French villages. The rides are spectacular with breath-taking passes and majestic mountain scenery.
