Cycle the Pyrenees from Barcelona to the Tourmalet

This unique road cycling trip starts in Barcelona and goes across Catalonia through Andorra and the Spanish Pyrenees all the way up to the summits of many iconic mountains of the Tour de France

If you like to bike with other people sharing emotions, if you want to see spectacular landscapes and sleep in towns with centuries of history… this is your route! You will bike from the Mediterranean sea to an altitude of more than 2000 meters high. From Spain to France and Andorra. You sleep in villages with history and bike through gorgeous landscapes. Cycle Port d’Envalira (highest asphalted col in the Pyrenees) and conquer Col de Peyresourde, Col d’Aspin and Col du Tourmalet. This is your opportunity!

Day 1

We’ll meet at our hotel. For those who want to have an airport pick up please contact us. The briefing will be at 18:00. Evening dinner will be provided. There will be a briefing and explanation for the coming activities and itinerary for this Barcelona – Col du Tourmalet trip in the Spanish and French Pyrenees.

Day 2: Barcelona - Viladrau

To get out of stunning Barcelona we taking the bike lanes along the river Besos, up to the Montseny area. Here you will climb the nicest col in the area: Col Formic. Solitaire roads, great views and ideal for cycling. Dinner included - Hotel in Viladrau distance 100km climbing metres 1556m. Col Formic

Day 3: Viladrau - Ripoll

After crossing the Les Guilleries mountain ranges we follow the way up to Col de Condreu and passing one of the nicest villages in Catalunya: Rupit. Afterwards you will get the volcanic area of La Garrotxa and its capital Olot. In Olot begins the second important climb of the day: Col de Canes. Dinner included - Hotel in Ripoli distance 110km climbing metres 1836m. Col de Condreu and Col de Canes

Day 4: Ripoll - Puigcerdà

Today you will tackle a tough col and not well known although Volta a Catalonia pro race has been here several times. Col de la Creueta is an spectacular mountain road with great views. After the summit we will get our way up to Collada de Toses, a long, beautiful and not very steep climb. Arrival is in Puigcerdà, the capital of Cerdanya region. We are already in the Pyrenees! Dinner included - Hotel in Puigcerdà distance 97km climbing metres 2048m. Col de la Creueta and Collada de Toses

Day 5: Puigcerdà - La Seu d’Urgell

This is not a very long stage, but it is really challenging stage. Our main goal is reaching Port d’Envalira, 2407 metres and the highest asphalted pass of whole Pyrenees. There will be a long and fast descent to Andorra. Tax free paradise! Finish in La Seu d’Urgell. Dinner included - Hotel in La Seu d’Urgell . Total distance 92km climbing metres 1678m. Col de Puymorens and Port d’Envalira (highest asphalted col in the Pyrenees)

Day 6 La Seu d’Urgell-Esterri d’Aneu

It is not definitely a rest stage although just one first category climb could be a kind of. Col de Cantó is a tough climb but once at the top, the main difficulties are done. When continuing through the stunning valley you will cross Sort town (translation: ‘Luck’). Maybe it is worth stopping to buy a lottery ticket? Dinner included - Hotel in Esterri d’Aneu. Total distance 85km climbing metres 1488m. Col de Cantó

Day 7: Esterri d’Aneu - Bagneres de Luchon

Two very different but both demanding climbs: La Bonaigua is a long ascent, over 2000 mts high, long but steep. Portillon is the pass connecting Spain to France, short and very steep. Arrival to France. We are getting closer the final challenge. Dinner included - Hotel in Bagneres de Luchon. Total distance 76km climbing metres 1692m. Port de la Bonaigua and Portillon.

Day 8: Bagneres de Luchon - Tourmalet.

Just 77 km, but such an epic stage. History of Tour de France was written here. The trilogy Peyresourde-Aspin-Tourmalet has been a classic in Tour de France. Tourmalet is the final destination of our trip, the final challenge. After reaching the summit you can descend by bike or in the van, as you already got the end of the trip. This night you will sleep again in Bagneres de Luchon where you can have a relaxing bath in the thermal baths of the town. Dinner included - Hotel in Esterri d’Aneu. Total distance 77km climbing meters 3140m.

Day 9: Back to Barcelona

Departure day…..Time to say goodbye and thanks for joining us. We wish you a good flight back home or else a pleasant stay in Spain.

Col du Tourmalet is one of the most famous climbs in cycling world. No doubt at all. It is not the most difficult climb, nor the most steep. It is not the highest. Not even has the best scenery. Not sure other climbs have more history. It is the combination of it all, that makes Tourmalet so special The Pyrenees is a real cycling paradise for every keen cyclist, you will experience one of the most challenging routes and mythical climbs
