  • Activity Type

There is something uniquely satisfying about completing a true ‘journey’ by bike and this trip certainly does just that, taking you through some of the most stunning and majestic cycling terrain enroute to the mediterranean.

The route climbs over all the cols that regularly feature in the Tour de France as well as the highest road in Europe at over 2800 metres. Our itinerary follows a slightly different route to the classic route, purely to take in some prettier and quiter roads that we have found.

Staying in hotels en route full board. During the day you have full van support, including basic bike repair, drinks and snacks.

This really is the challenge of a lifetime being one of Europe’s great cycle tours, and to remember your achievement you will receive a souvenir performance cycle jersey and photography.

Raise a minimum sponsorship of £1500 to take part in the challenge ride - register for £150 - then get fundraising! Once registered you will receive a challenge pack including training plan advice and fundraising ideas to get you off to a good start. The remaining sponsorship amount is due by 31st July 2015.

And an important fact: Children’s Hospice South West relies on charity donations for 85% of its annual funding - it is not a service provided by the NHS or the government and it can only keep helping families with the generosity of the general public.

We know how important their work is - our family has been supported by Little Bridge House for many years, as our daughter has a life limiting and threatening condition - we just want to say Thank You.

This itinerary is to complete the trip in 7 days (6 days of cycling)

Day 1

Collection from Geneva airport and transport to hotel at Thonon les Bains. Build bikes and short test ride along the shores of Lake Geneva. Pre-ride briefing, photographs and evening meal.

Day 2

Thonon les Bains to Flumet via the Col de Moises 1138m, Col de Ludran 938m and Col des Aravis 1486m. We take a slight deviation from the traditional route to enjoy the much quieter roads over the Cols Moises and Ludran before climbing over the last Col of the day, the relatively gentle Col Des Aravis.

Day 3

Flumet to Bourg St Maurice, via the Col des Saisies 1650m and the atmospheric Cormet de Roseland 1967m. The first climb of the day ascends the partly wooded Col des Saisies, then descending to the valley floor once more to the foot of the atmospheric Cormet de Roseland. This climbs past a wild landscape with stunning views and a sensation of remoteness before descending once again to the town of Bourg St Maurice.

Day 4

From Bourg St Maurice to St Michel de Maurienne over the Col D’Iseran at 2764m - this was until recently the highest pass on the route. This is followed by a long and beautiful descent to St Michel de Maurienne.

Day 5

St Michel de Maurianne to Briancon via the Col du Telegraphe and the Col du Galibier. Although listed as two climbs this is really one climb with a short descent from the summit of the Telegraph to the town of Valloire, before the road climbs again to the summit of the Col du Galibier at 2646m. There is a then a long descent down to the impressive fortress town of Briancon.

Day 6

From Briancon the route climbs past the stunning rock formations of the Col d’Izoard 2362m. Pause to pay your respects to the Coppi and Bobet monument and to take in the remarkable Casse Deserte. The second climb of the day tackles Col de Vars 2108m, which can be a punishing ascent in high temperatures, before descending to the beautiful Ubaye Valley. The final ascent of the day climbs over the highest road in Europe at 2802m. Until recently Col d’Iseran held this title but a stretch of road was added above the Col de Restefond to make Col de la Bonette higher by 38m. A beautiful climb with gentle gradients gives opportunities for marmotte spotting on the descent to Saint-Etienne de Tinee.

Day 7

The run to the Mediterranean begins today over Col Saint-Martin, 1500m before heading up Col de Turini, 1607m, which marks the last climb of the Monte Carlo Rally. Pause for a cold drink in the picturesque village of Sospel before tackling the final obstacle of the trip, the gentle Col de Castillon, 628m. Once over the top it’s all downhill to enjoy the best ice cream or sorbet you’ve ever tasted in the beautiful town of Menton. Transport to the Hotel in Nice, souvenir presentations, photographs and celebratory last night meal round off the challenge.

Day 8

Depart the hotel and transport to Nice Airport for the triumphant return home.

You will be staying in hotels en route full board.
