Need To Know

One of the most beautiful places in the world. A fjord is a deep, narrow and elongated part of the sea, that stretches inland for miles, winding around mountains, valleys, and steep cliffs. The fjords were formed by the giant glacier tongues and shaped over several ice ages.

The total hiking distance on day one is 12km with up to 1189m elevation gain, 500m elevation drop. On day two we’ll be hiking 12km with 500m elevation drop.

You really don’t need to an experienced hiker to join this trip but this is not a beginner hike. Regularly active people in good physical condition can complete this hike easily - it just takes a bit of time getting up the steep section on the first day but don’t worry, it’s no race to the top.

The weather in summer is very comfortable for hiking and sleeping in a mountain hut. Temperatures are around 15-20 degrees celsius, sometimes more. It can get chilly at night so do pack a warm jumper and some thermals regardless of season. This time of year daylight in Norway is constant with only 2 – 3 hours of darkness in the evenings.

To maximise convenience we include as much of your travel and logistics in this package, so you just need to turn up and play. In this trip:

  • One night in local accommodation in Gudvangen, one night in a mountain hut
  • 2 airport transfers
  • Guide(s)
  • Transportation, logistics, maps, Satellite Epirb beacon, first aid kit, and other relevant items
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner with beer in the hut on Day 2, Breakfast and Lunch on Day three
  • Snacks along the way
  • 2 boat transfers

The only other costs will be your flights, dinner in a local restaurant on your first night and any snacks you want to buy beforehand.

You’ll need to bring along the following:

  • Good quality (and ideally worn in) hiking shoes or low ankle support boots. Goretex or waterproof shoes are recommended as you’ll be traipsing through streams and muddy patches.
  • A hiking backpack of around 25-30 liter with a comfortable carrying system with the ability to carry around 10kg of gear in total.
  • Rainproof and weatherproof outdoor clothing.
  • Gators if you have some, if not they will be provided by us.
  • Hiking poles if needed.
  • Any personal items (small toilet bag, favourite snacks etc).

Yes - when you arrive at the base you’ll be asked to transfer anything you need for the trip into dry bags to take with you. You can leave anything you don’t need behind to be safely secured in a locker which you’ll collect again at the end of the trip.

There will be between 6-12 people on this trip. The maximum is 12 based on accommodation options.

Our Epic Weekends are very social in nature and we’ve seen lots of new friendships born out of them. Expect a mix of like-minded solo travellers and very small groups of 2 or 3, all with a shared appreciation of escaping the city for the great outdoors to try something new and meet new people.

Absolutely. Just let us know what they are when you book.

Our 2 Day Guided Hiking Fjord tour generally run from Mid June to Mid September - snow conditions in the mountains at spring time decides how soon we can launch this tour.

If you’re looking to make the most of your weekend away, why not arrive early and explore Bergen? Buses to/from the airport run every 15 minutes, and cost roughly £9 each way, while a taxi can be booked for between £35-£55, depending on traffic.
Known as the gateway to the Fjords, Bergen is a UNESCO World Heritage City as well as a European City of Culture, so there is plenty to see and do. Spend Friday afternoon exploring its many sites then head down to the train station to make your own way to Voss. Trains run regularly throughout the day and don’t need to be booked in advance, with a single ticket to Voss costing roughly £20. It’s also 45 minutes faster than the included transfer and is one of the most spectacular journeys you can take by rail. For the return, make your life easy by jumping on the already included transfers to Bergen Airport. *

  • your local host will confirm your accommodation allocation 10 days before departure.

Unfortunately it is not possible to arrange pick ups or drop offs from Bergen or Voss centres due to the tight transfer schedule.

Start point?
You will be met at Bergen Airport and transferred to your hostel accommodation in Voss for the evening. Your local host runs 1 transfer for this trip, departing between 14:00-14:30 so please schedule your flights to arrive before 14:00.

A late evening shuttle departing at 00:00 - 00:30 is also available for an additional £50.
(This is designed to meet the 20:40 flight with Norwegian Air / other late flight options for minimal time off work).

Finish point?
Your trip will end at Bergen Airport in time to catch the 19:10 Norwegian Air Shuttle flight to Gatwick. For other options, you are free to book any flight that departs after 19:00. Your host will be in touch before the trip to finalise details.

Getting there and away?
Bergen Airport, Flesland (BGO) is served by British Airways, Loganair, Norwegian Air Shuttle, and Scandinavian Airlines. Your pickup and drop-off times are scheduled to coincide with specific flights from Gatwick, but you may arrive on a different flight as long as you’re able to meet your host at the designated transfer time.

Travel FAQs

  • The flight arriving at 23:40 from London Gatwick is often delayed, but the 00:00 - 00:30 transfer will still be waiting for you.

  • If you’re thinking of arriving/departing via Oslo, Voss can also be reached via a direct train from the capital.

We’ve teamed up with the guys at World Nomads to offer insurance designed for adventurous travellers across 140 countries that includes overseas medical, evacuation, baggage and a range of adventure sports and activities. To get yours sorted, click here.

Weekend flights will always be more expensive than mid-week options. If you’ve got holiday to use and want to get the most for your money, arriving a day or two before, or departing a day or two later, can save you some money.

For example, Tuesday morning flights back to London are cheaper than Sunday evening and Monday morning flights. You can use the cash you save on the flight ticket on a night’s accommodation in Bergen and spend some time exploring this European city of culture.

*Note: The return airport transfer can only stop at Bergen Airport, however there are buses that run every 10 minutes, a tram line and taxi’s all available from the airport - all of which accept card payments.

What to Expect

The Weekend Plan

Experience the stunning Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO world heritage site, on this epic weekend escape.

Day 1 - Friday. Get there.

  • Say goodbye to the city and head to Bergen for 14:00 or 23:45 where you will be met by your transfer.
  • Meet your private transfer from Voss if you were on the early flight, or your accommodation in Bergen if you were on the later flight.
  • Get a good night’s sleep ahead of a big day tomorrow.

Day 2 - Saturday. Boots on and hike up.

  • Get picked up and taken to Gudvangen to meet your guide and go through the plans.
  • Set off from Gudvangen to Tufto (5 km) where you’ll stop for a short rest before beginning your ascent up the local hiking path to Rimstigen. This is a fairly steep climb and will take a few hours. You’ll reach the saddle by early afternoon and enjoy your picnic lunch with amazing landscape views overlooking the fjord.
  • After lunch, you’ll continue hiking into the backlands above the fjord, following the ridge across to Breiskreinosi - home to the best views of the region. After a stop here you’ll begin your descent down the backside of the mountain into the lower valley at Vassete.
  • In the late afternoon or early evening, you’ll reach your mountain cabin where you will be staying for the night. Settle down for dinner, and chocolate - lit with paraffin lamps - the area has no power.

Day 3 - Sunday. Hike back down and fly home.

  • The next morning you’ll wake up, have breakfast and begin our hike down to Dyrdal, a village at fjord level.
  • From there you’ll hike along the side of the fjord to a boat point where you will be provided a boat transfer across to the opposite side.
  • You join a level hiking trail - without the vertical gains like the previous day - so don’t worry too much about sore legs! You’ll visit the farm museum at Styvi and eat lunch.
  • In the afternoon, you’ll hike along the Nærøyfjord at sea level, passing the Odnes waterfall where you can stop for a refreshing drink of clean pure mountain melt water before embarking on the last few kilometers of our hike.
  • Another boat crossing at Bleiklindi awaits and once on the other side you’ll either hike back to Gudvangen or use a van transfer depending on timing.
  • Back in Gudvangen there will be time for a rest before your airport transfer.
  • Emotional farewells and return home with renewed energy and a pocket full of epic photos.

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, and weather conditions and forecasts.
