Need To Know

The following are not included in the trip price:

  • Travel to/from Debrecen
  • Personal expenses
  • Travel insurance that covers caving and mountain biking
  • Tips for your guides (optional)

This trip will run with a maximum of 16 people. There will be a maximum of 8 people per guide.

Sure can! A lot of people do and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our Epic Weekends are very social in nature and we’ve seen lots of new friendships born out of them. Expect a mix of solo travelers and very small groups of 2 or 3, all with a shared appreciation of escaping the city for the great outdoors to try something new and meet new people.

There are 2 types of caves included in this trip. Show caves like the crystal cave and the Mexiadului Cave are open to the general public but still offer a majestic underground experience.

The technical cave you’ll explore on Friday is not open to the general public. With the help of your guide you will negotiate narrow passages, climb, clamber, descend into small chambers, and make your way past stalagmites or stalactites. Although not for those with claustrophobia, It is an accessible experience and one you won’t forget!

You do not need any previous experience. Your guide will give you full instructions and a safety briefing at the start. You’ll just need an average level of fitness to handle approximately 3-4 hours of activity each day.

The caving part of this trip is an accessible caving experience, with mainly horizontal galleries. Your guide will be on hand at all times to help you through, however it is not recommended for those with severe Claustrophobia.

Romanian food is hearty, flavourful, and heavily influenced by neighbouring countries. Most meals start with a soup, often made with meat, vegetables or fish and made sour with lemon or vinegar. Sausages and other meats are popular, as well as meat and vegetable pies, goulash, stuffed cabbage rolls and cheeses.

Absolutely. Just let us know at booking.

Summer is the best season to explore the area, but spring and autumn are very pleasant too, although there are chances of rain. The average daily high is around 27°C in summer. It cools down at night, so pack some warmer clothes for sitting around the fire.

All technical equipment will be provided. For the rest of your weekend we recommend you bring:

  • Hiking shoes
  • A waterproof jacket
  • A warm sweater or fleece
  • Water bottle
  • Camera
  • A small rucksack for carrying personal items throughout the day

The minimum age required to join this trip is 12 years and above.

The Western Carpathians area in Romania is a seldom-visited mountain plateau home to a wide variety of landscapes including ancient forests, verdant meadows, impressive gorges, legendary waterfalls and fascinating caves. Over millions of years the mountains were lifted up and submerged by the sea several times over, experiencing tropical, subtropical and glacial climates over the years. As a result, this relatively small area is host to a geologic mosaic of conglomerate, crystalline, volcanic and limestone rocks.

The area is home to an abundance of animals and rare plants.Brown bears still roam the Carpathian Mountains and you can sometimes hear wolves howling at night. Lynx, wildcats, chamois and capercaillies exist here too, but they are extremely rare to see.

What to Expect

Thursday: Arrival

Your host will meet you at the Debrecen Airport in Hungary and take you 1 hour away to Oradea, an art nouveau town on the Romanian side of the border.

Grab a quick lunch, then head into the Padurea Craiului Mountains and check into your guesthouse in the village of Rosia. Review the weekend’s plan, enjoy a traditional dinner, then sit back and relax by a campfire.

Friday: Caving and zip-lining

After breakfast you’ll head to a unique cave containing fragile calcium crystals and accessible only through a former mine.

From there you’ll jump on a 200m zipline to traverse a series or forested ravines—get your GoPro ready! After that, you’ll have a chance to walk on the thematic Discover Rosia Valley route where you’ll learn about the fauna, flora and the karst features of the area, with a fantastic viewpoint over the Lazuri Gorge.

Afterwards you’ll embark on a technical caving experience. Review equipment and safety, then delve into a mystical network of subterranean passages, galleries and caverns unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Emerge into the light and return to your guesthouse for dinner and a sip or three of palinka, a strong plum brandy often compared to a bioweapon.

Saturday: Hiking and Mountain biking

Today you’ll explore the area around Rosia. Start with a hike through Cutilor Gorge that emerges into the expansive Cutilor Valley. You’ll pass several impressive cave entrances and see very rare species of plants.

Return to Rosia for lunch, then take the mountain bikes and enjoy a ride through wide karst plateaus, deep valleys and remote human settlements.

Head back to Rosia for your last night in Romania.

Sunday: Caving and departure
