What to Expect

Friday: Arrival

Your host will meet you at the airport in Helsinki. Transfer 1.5 hours to your accommodation in Huruksela. Check in, review the weekend’s plan, then rest up for tomorrow’s adventure.

Saturday: Packraft and wildcamp

Enjoy a hot breakfast, then pack your personal belongings into drybags and leave the rest of your luggage in secure storage.

The launching point is just outside your accommodation. Review equipment and safety, then begin paddling down the Kymi River.

Run some splashy rapids and practice your skills in the gentler currents before venturing into bigger rapids.

Break for lunch on the shore, then continue down the river. Take a deep breath and take in the peaceful surroundings. You’re in a wilderness paradise!

In the late afternoon you’ll deflate your little raft for a short hike to the campsite in the heart of Valkmusa National Park. Explore the surrounding cliffs, caves and forests, then enjoy a 3-course campfire dinner before heading to bed either in your tent or under the stars.

Sunday: Hiking and departure

Wake up in your remarkable campsite and enjoy coffee and breakfast around the fire.

Hike further into the park on a marked trail, climb a bird watching tower for amazing views, and eventually meet up with a road where your ride is waiting.

You’ll arrive back at the B&B around midday for lunch and a shower, then transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, weather conditions and forecasts, special events, etc.

Accommodation

Your first night will be spent in cozy B&B on the river. The hotel features ensuite 2-4 person rooms that will be shared among the group.

The second night will be spent camping in spacious 3-person tents in Valkmusa National Park. There’s a sheltered fireplace at the campsite. Sleeping bags and sleeping mats are provided. If the weather is nice you can choose to forego the tent and sleep under the stars!

The trip starts in the Huruksela region 1.5 hours northeast of Helsinki. From there you’ll paddle one of the most remote sections of the Kymi River. The Kymi is just 204km long, but drains a huge area of southern Finland. The water is clean, calm and swift for most of its length, with scattered low-class rapids to make things more exciting.

Your route will take you into Valkmusa National Park, a prehistoric-seeming landscape of protected marshes, bogs, cliffs and old spruce forests. Raised causeways crisscross more than 30 types of swamps and springs. The park is home to a diverse range of bird and butterfly species.

Sure can! Lots of people do it and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our Epic Weekends are very social in nature and we’ve seen lots of new friendships born out of them. Expect a mix of solo travelers and very small groups of 2 or 3, all with a shared appreciation of escaping the city for the great outdoors to try something new and meet new people.

Packrafting is a combination of paddling in light inflatable boats, then packing them up and hiking with them to access a new area. This trip has more paddling than hiking. Originating from wilderness travel in Alaska, packrafting is a bit of a niche sport but is gaining popularity fast. The whole paddling kit (raft, paddle, PFD and helmet) weighs under 5kg and packs down small so it’s easy to carry, yet packrafts are very capable boats, certainly not to be mistaken as pool toys. They are durable, stable and easy to paddle.

You do not need any paddling or hiking experience for this trip. Your guide will give you full instructions and a safety briefing at the start, and you’ll have opportunities to practice in your packraft along the way. You’ll just need an average level of fitness to handle approx 20km of relaxed paddling and some hiking.

The white water will be maximum class II, easily managed in the wide and steady packrafts. If you don’t feel like paddling the white water, you can portage a few hundred meters past the faster bits.

Finnish cuisine blends traditional and modern continental foods for delicious and varied dining opportunities. Dishes commonly include fish, pork, beef or reindeer, but also involve lots of vegetables and mushrooms. Typical meals include cabbage rolls, hearty stews, meatballs, a fish prepared in a number of ways.

While camping the food will be simple, hearty, healthy and fresh.

Absolutely! Just let us know at booking.

From May to early June daytime temperatures are around 20°C. From mid-June to mid-September temperatures range from 15-25 °C. At the end of September the temperatures start to decline again.

Summer nights are very short and not really dark at all. From mid-August onward the nights get darker, revealing starry skies and sometimes even auroras—if you’re really lucky.

Not much! All packrafting and camping equipment is included, so you’ll only need to bring:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothes for paddling and hiking
  • Sun protection (sunglasses, hat, sunblock)
  • Thermal top and bottom
  • Waterproof top and bottom
  • Warm fleece, sweater or puffy
  • Swimsuit and towel (if you’re brave!)
  • Water bottle
  • Packable camp pillow (optional)
  • Shoes that can get wet, like Crocs, neoprene socks or “barefoot shoes”. No flip-flops.
  • Sturdy, supportive hiking shoes (waterproof is ideal)
  • Head torch
  • Personal items
