This trip will run with a minimum of 4 people, and a maximum of 8. Please note, if there are not 4 people booked the trip may be rearranged or cancelled. Please contact us for confirmation before booking your flights, or book with a credit card.

The kayaking is a relaxed, scenic 8km paddle in the second cleanest river in Europe. It will take 2-3 hours on predominantly calm water, with a few small fun rapids towards the end. You will be in stable, two-person, open-top kayaks.

You do not need any special kayaking or hiking experience. Your guide will give you full instructions and a safety briefing at the start. For the hiking, you need a reasonable level of fitness to handle approx. 6-7 hour of hiking over fairly rough, hilly terrain.

All the activities on this trip will be led in English by qualified and professional local guides.

The two dinners provided will be freshly cooked, hearty mountain meals. These include beans with sausages and a beef stew—perfect fuel to recharge you after a long day of activities.

Summer and early autumn are the best periods to visit the Velebit Mountains. In summer the average temperature is around 22 degrees, autumn is slightly chillier but still really pleasant and colours are stunning.

All kayaking equipment will be provided. For the rest of your weekend in the Velebit Mountains, we recommend you bring:

  • Good hiking shoes
  • Flip flops, swimming suit and a towel
  • Clothes in layers - for hot and cold parts of the day.
  • Some money for the non-included meals - approx. 30€.
  • A sleeping bag and a good rucksack.

You will be met at the Zagreb airport at noon on Friday. Your host will be in touch before the trip to finalise details.

Finish point?
Your trip will end back at the Zagreb airport on Sunday morning in time to catch a midday flight home. Your host will be in touch before the trip to finalise details.

Getting there and away?
Zagreb Airport (ZAG) is served by British Airways, Croatia Airlines and Monarch Airlines (beginning May 2017). The included airport transfers coincide with the arrival of British Airways flight #848 on Friday, and the departure of British Airways flight #849 on Sunday. You may certainly choose other flights that suit you, but aim for the listed times if you want to use the included transfers.

You can also use choose to fly into Pula airport or Trieste airport, but without airport transfers. In that case, the meeting point will be in the village of Otočac on Friday at 14:30.

The Velebit Mountains are part of the UNESCO world network of biosphere reserves, and is an important conservation area for a range of diverse and little explored habitats. Its beauty, serenity and grandeur will rejuvenate you.

The large complex of preserved woodlands is home to bears, wolf and lynx, a sign of a well-protected ecosystem. Vertebrates identified so far in the National Park include six species of amphibians, sixteen species of reptiles, about a hundred species of birds, and about forty species of mammals. Many of these species are classified as strictly protected or protected under Croatian Nature Conservation Act.

At the footsteps of the mountains, the Gacka River is one of the cleanest rivers in Europe. Its surroundings embody peace and harmony with nature.

What to Expect

The Weekend Plan

This Epic Weekend trip will have you kayaking, hiking and exploring one of the most stunning parts of Croatia, if not Europe.

Day 1, Friday: Get there and kayak.

  • No work today. Say goodbye to the city and jump on your flight to Zagreb.
  • You’ll be met at the airport by a friendly face for your 2.5 hour drive to the kayaking spot.
  • Enjoy 2-3 hours paddling down the beautiful Gacka River, flanked by karst fields.
  • We’ll follow this up with a 1.5 hour scenic drive to the Northern Velebit National Park.
  • Settle into our mountain hut and enjoy dinner and drinks amongst beautiful mountain surroundings.

Day 2, Saturday: Hike the Premužić trail.

  • Wake up to sunrise over mountain peaks, before setting off into the mountain trails on foot.
  • After a short walk to the hilltops, embark on a 6-hour-trek along through the valleys.
  • Settle into a renovated shepherd’s house in Alan and rest our weary legs.
  • We’ll have a nice dinner, drink wine and chat into the night to end a great day.

Day 3, Sunday: Head back to Zagreb

  • A final breakfast surrounded by nature.
  • We’ll get a 3-hour transfer back to Zagreb (arriving by 11.30).
  • Fly back home with a tale to tell - or stay longer to see more of Croatia of course!

Accommodation

You’ll be staying in rustic mountain accommodations inside the National Park on both nights, surrounded by the tranquility of the mountains, well away from it all for a couple of days.

On the first night you’ll be in the Zavižan Mountain hut - a two-storey building built on the foundations of the former Krajač’s house. The hut has drinks for sales, and a beautiful terrace out the front. On the ground floor there is a kitchen, a group dormitory (14 beds) and a dining room with 40 seats. The first floor comprises rooms with two, four, and eight beds. Rooms and dormitories are furnished with bunk beds and bedding. The house has electricity and telephone. You just need to bring your sleeping bag.

On the second night you’ll stay at the Alan mountain hut. The hut is a wooden cabin featuring 4 beds on the floor and 6 mattresses on the gallery. There is a dining table with chairs, kitchen with all the equipment needed for preparing meals and a stove. There is electricity from solar panels, so batteries can be recharged, and drinkable water in canisters is provided by the Park. It is recommended to bring your own sleeping bags, though bedding can be arranged.
