Ski Touring the Spanish Pyrenees

Base yourself in a spectacular mountain refuge for a weekend of fun in the snow. 1 ½ days off work.

Escape the city for a weekend of mountain adventure in the beautiful Spanish Pyrenees. You’ll ski into a remote mountain lodge and explore the surrounding mountains and valleys from there. Return to the refuge each night and enjoy conversation with other skiers, hot meals and incredible views. Your hassle-free epic weekend includes:

  • 3 days ski touring with an experienced local guide
  • 2 nights in a remote mountain lodge only reachable by skis or snowmobile
  • 1 night at a hotel
  • All meals, including a 3-course dinner with wine at a charming mountain restaurant
  • Airport transfers

Perfect for?
On the pre-set group dates, this trip is solely for advanced skiers comfortable in all off piste snow conditions, with basic ski touring experience (know what a kick turn is, even if it’s not perfected) and good fitness levels. Alternatively, enquire to book a private group on different dates.

Need To Know

  • Flights to Toulouse
  • Equipment rental – if you don’t have your own gear you can rent on arrival for reasonable prices
  • Alcoholic drinks at the mountain refuge

On your arrival, the transfer will be holding a sign with the name of the tour. We’ll give you all the details before travelling.

Although super light equipment makes long ascents much less daunting, a good level of fitness is required to enjoy and make the most out of the experience. If you run, cycle, trek or gym regularly you will be fine.

To ensure everyone enjoys the weekend, the pre-set social dates are solely for advanced skiers comfortable in all off piste snow conditions, with basic ski touring experience (knows what a kick turn is, even if it’s not perfected).

If booking a private trip, the guides can cater for almost any levels of fitness and skiing ability. Our guides can ease you in to off-piste and touring techniques. Whether your preference is peaking the most technical mountains or finding the most perfect untracked powder, we’ll get you where you want to be.

For maximum enjoyment and comfort whilst ski touring, bring the outdoor winter clothing in three layers:

  • layer 1 – thermal underwear (synthetic, dry wick is the most comfortable, not cotton)
  • layer 2 – insulation layer (synthetic primaloft is best for touring, down also fine)
  • layer 3 – shell layer (wind and waterproof shell jacket and trousers – ideally not padded)
  • Ski socks (synthetic, not cotton)
  • Gloves and hat
  • Goggles, sunglasses, suncream

Plus warm comfortable clothes to wear in the refuge in the evenings. Remember you carry everything you bring!

The following technical equipment is needed and available to rent on arrival:

  • skis and boots (with touring bindings)
  • poles
  • helmet
  • rucksacks
  • avalanche rescue kit – shovel, probe and transceivers

All the guides are English speaking, fully qualified professional guides, with the best local knowledge.

Something we can definitely guarantee is that you will be fed well. Each evening you will be served a 3 course meal, and breakfasts and lunches are also included. Being in a remote refuge, ingredients can be limited so don’t expect Michelin star food, but certainly good, tasty and filling food with a Spanish influence.

Absolutely, just let us know when you make your booking.

Book on to our pre-set dates above. However if you are considering a private trip on alternative dates, ski touring in Val d’Aran is normally possible from the end of November until mid-April, but for the best conditions, the perfect time is from beginning of January to end of March.

Yes of course! A lot of people do, it’s a great way to meet likeminded people.

The trip will run with a minimum of 4 people, and a maximum of 6 people per guide. We can cater for bigger groups, but any groups bigger than 6 will need more than one guide. Please note, if there are not 4 people booked on 3 months before departure, then the trip may be rearranged or cancelled. Please contact us for confirmation before booking your flights, or book with a credit card.

Of course! For private groups of four or more the trip can run on any days you wish, be extended or changed to suit your needs. Enquire now for a private trip.

Location

Val d’Aran is an area in Catalonia that was largely isolated until 1948 when a tunnel was built through the mountain, linking it to the rest of Spain. Today it still maintains its own strong sense of identity, with its own culture, cuisine and language (Aranese).

Surrounding the resort of Baqueira-Beret are vast areas of untouched wilderness perfect for ski touring.

Due to Atlantic influence, Val d’Aran often enjoys some of the best snow coverage in Europe. The resort of Baqueira Beret recently recorded a hefty base of 400cm when lifts closed at the end of the season. As well as getting plenty of snow, the area also gets plenty of sunshine, and therefore perfect for ski touring. During January and February, prepare for cold conditions, with daytime temperatures often reaching -5 to -10. It warms up in March, and conditions can be variable, from perfect powder, to spring conditions.

What to Expect

The weekend plan

Val d’Aran is one of the most spectacular places in Europe to go ski touring. It’s wild untouched mountains provide limitless possibilities for skiing and mountaineering. Your guides have decades of local experience, and good levels of English.

Day 1, Thursday. Get there.

Leave the office early and jump on a flight to Toulouse, then meet your transfer for a 2-hour drive into the beautiful Pyrenees.

We’ll stay at a hotel in the local village. Enjoy getting to know the group over a three course dinner (including wine) at local restaurant.

Day 2, Friday. Head to the mountains.

After breakfast, we’ll head straight to the resort of Baqueira, where you’ll meet your guide and rent any equipment you need.

Your guide will have handpicked a route to best suit the conditions on the day and your ski ability. If conditions allow, you will summit a mountain and ski some virgin untracked powder on the way down.

You will finish your day arriving at a remote mountain refuge (only accessible by skis or snowmobiles). Enjoy a hearty meal and a glass of wine before getting some rest for the next day.

Day 3, Saturday. Peaks and couloirs.

After an early breakfast at the refuge, set off for another epic day in the mountains in search of the perfect line.

Your guides will have hand picked another route to suite conditions and ski level. It could be an adrenaline fuelled couloir, or a mellow open powder field.

In the afternoon, ski back to the refuge where you can enjoy supper whilst discussing the highlights of the day.

Day 4, Sunday. More skiing, head home.

After breakfast head out for a last full day in the mountains. In the afternoon your guide will lead you back to the pick up point where your airport transfer will be waiting to take you back to Toulouse.

Catch a flight back home and be ready for the office Monday morning, with a pocket full of photos.

Accommodation

You’ll spend your first night in a hotel in the charming village of Salardu, Unha or Arties, all less than 10 minutes drive from the resort of Baqueira, where your ski touring adventure will begin.

The exact accommodation will depend on group size, dates and availability and can be confirmed before the balance payment is due. The rooms are twin or double, with single occupancy available on request for an extra £50.

The next two nights you will be sleeping in the Amics de Montgarri Mountain Lodge, which is located in the picturesque abandoned village of Montgarri, where only a few ruins and an 18th-century church remain. In the winter there is no road access and the lodge is only reachable by skis, snowmobile or dog sleighs.

Services at the mountain lodge are very comfortable but basic, so don’t expect anything too fancy. The accommodation consists of shared rooms with bunk beds, heating, hot showers, blankets, food and drinks in a beautiful rustic setting.
