The Cyclades are a group of islands southeast of mainland Greece. There are 220 islands in the group, of which Santorini is the southernmost and one of the most famous. The island’s most distinguishing feature is the enormous, ancient caldera in its middle. Measuring 12 by 7 km, the caldera is connected to the sea at two points and is framed by 300m tall cliff walls on three sides. Clinging to one of those cliffs is the town of Fira. Its cascading buildings are whitewashed with volcanic ash and provide a stark contrast to the deep blue sky above.

Santorini is a top tourism destination. Travelers from all around the world come to swim in the crystal waters and hike the volcanic landscape. The island is also known for its wine and its uniquely delicious vegetables, including famously juicy cherry tomatoes, white aubergines, and courgettes that are so light and fresh they almost taste like melons. With all that and more, it’s easy to see why Santorini is at the top of many travellers’ lists.

The climate in the Cyclades Islands is Mediterranean. From May to September the air temperature ranges from 20 – 25 °C, with the sea temperature lagging a degree or two behind. Days are often breezy, especially on the water, but they’re also clear and sunny with practically no chance of rain.

Greek food is delicious! Typical menu items include Greek salad, fresh seafood, moussaka (kind of like lasagna), souvlaki (meat skewers served on a platter or in a wrap), and dolmades (stuffed grape leaves).
