Ski Touring in the Southern French Alps

Experience the beautiful Ecrins National Park with a series of guided ski tours from a B&B. 1 day off work.

Spend your weekend sharpening your ski touring skills while accessing the beautiful 3000m peaks and untouched bowls of the Ecrins National Park and Champsaur Valley in the Southern French Alps. Relax in the evenings at your alpine hotel, dip in the swimming pool and enjoy some excellent French food at a local restaurant of your choice. Your hassle-free trip includes:

  • 2-nights bed and breakfast
  • 3-days ski touring with UIAGM high mountain guide
  • Ski touring equipment (skis, boots, skins, ski crampons, poles)
  • Avalanche safety kit (transceiver, probe and shovel)
  • Return transfers from Gap

Perfect for?
Previous ski touring experience isn’t essential but is an advantage. An intermediate or advanced level of skiing with some experience of skiing off piste is required. A good level of fitness is needed - you will be doing between 500m and 1200m of ascent daily, and some days with a big backpack.

Please note, prices are based on 2 people sharing twin or double rooms. Single supplement is £55 per night if you wish your own room.

The long days of ski touring require a good level of fitness. You’ll be ascending up to 1200m in a day.

Breakfasts are freshly prepared continental breakfasts with hot options daily. For evening meals, the hotel restaurant serves mountain and local specialities including fondue and raclette and has a vaulted ceiling which creates a wonderful ambiance. You could also eat in other village restaurants nearby.

You will need to bring plenty of warm, waterproof and thermal clothing for full days spent outside, as well as a water bottle or flask, sun protection, and a 45 L rucksack for carrying layers and personal items. You will find you get hot touring, so bring lots of thin layers. A full packing list will be sent to you after booking. All ski touring equipment is included, but you may bring your own if you prefer.

There will be 6 people in your group, plus the guide. Please note if a group size of 6 has not been reached 3 months before departure the trip may be cancelled or rearranged. We advise you do not arrange travel until you have been told the trip is guaranteed to run.

Gap Airport (SFQ) is served by a direct overnight train from Paris, complete with comfy beds. Just finish work on a Friday and jump on the train.

The Champsaur Valley has not experienced any mass development, allowing nature and wildlife to thrive. Many animals call the valley home, including chamois, ibex, deer, wild boar and golden eagles. It’s the perfect setting for a truly wild and unique winter adventure.

The skiing terrain is ideal, with a range of accessible routes on all types of slope and aspect. Your guide can pick the best conditions for every day.

Ancelles is a picturesque alpine village on a plateau surrounded by the mountains you will be exploring.

What to Expect

The Plan

The area is a perfect place for ski touring. There is a great variety of easy day tours with the possibility to choose slightly more technical routes according to the group. Based in Ancelle, there is full flexibility over route choice each day, your guide will make the most of local conditions and choose day tours adapted to the group.

Saturday: Arrive, ski tour

Arrive at Gap train station at 7:00 in the morning (on the night train from Paris). Your guide will greet you at the train station and take you to your hotel for an energizing breakfast. Get changed, collect your ski touring kit, and head out into 3000m tall peaks, frequented by wildlife like chamois and ibex. Return to your hotel in the afternoon to relax, take a swim and enjoy a good meal.

Sunday: Ski touring

After breakfast, head out for another full day’s ski touring. Your guide will have worked out another ideal route for the conditions. Head back to your hotel in the evening to relax.

Monday: Ski touring and departure

Your guide will decide where to go to find the best snow for your last adventure. After another full day, you’ll be taken back to Gap to catch the night train back to Paris. Your host will arrange for somewhere to leave bags next to train station so you can go off to a restaurant bag free.

Accommodation

Your base will be the lovely Autanes Hotel in Ancelles - a pretty alpine village in the heart of the Champsaur valley in the Southern French Alps.

The classic chalet alpine style hotel has a heated indoor pool (free) and spa with Hammam, Sauna, Jacuzzi, Multi jets shower and Massage bed (payable as extra). It features a variety of twin and double ensuite rooms. The staff are very friendly and hospitable and although some speak better English than others they are all willing to have a go and will look after you during your stay!

The restaurant serves mountain and local specialities including fondue and raclette and has a vaulted ceiling which creates a wonderful ambiance.

It’s just a few minutes walk from downhill and cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The village has a regular market and is situated on a beautiful plateau surrounded by mountains.
