Ascend Slovenia's highest peak, Mount Triglav – considered a rite of passage for locals – via the classic two-day approach

Explore the Triglav National Park, a preserved area of limestone rock walls, caves, rushing rivers and endless green hills and forests

Eyes open for the huge variety of wildlife that calls this area home, including golden eagles, griffon vultures, lynx, chamois, marmots and ibex

Deemed an epic 'Walk of a lifetime' by The Guardian

Day 1

Welcome to Slovenia

Meet your host at Ljubljana airport and transfer to your base on the doorstep of the Julian Alps. Most groups will stay in the charming town of Radovljica, some groups will stay on the serene Pokljuka Plateau (please see the ‘food and accommodation’ section for more details). Check into your accommodation before meeting up with your guide for a chat through the adventure to come.

Day 2

The Kredarica hut

Hiking

6-7hrs · 8km · 1640m up

Groups staying in Radovljica will drive to the start of the trek in the Triglav National Park's lovely Krma Valley. Ascend through a peaceful forest and onto a high plateau with some wonderful views. In the afternoon you'll arrive at the Kredarica hut. Relax with a hot drink and enjoy the view, or explore the area and find a nice vantage point for sunset.

Groups staying in Pokljuka will start today’s hike from a different trailhead. The path traverses lush meadows and dense forests, passing Vodnik hut, before continuing the ascent to Kredarica mountain hut. This route usually takes 7-8hrs with an elevation of 1520m.

Day 3

Summit Mount Triglav

Hiking

8-9hrs · 11km · 350m up · 1990m down

Walk along a rocky path until you arrive at the base of the 400m via ferrata route to the top. Climb the series of cables and ladders and work your way up to the summit. Enjoy the views in every direction and then descend back to the hut and return to Ljubljana airport in the early evening in time for onward travel.

What is the food like?

Food in Slovenia is very diverse, with lots of influence from neighbouring countries but you can also find international cuisine in Radovljica. For dinner, the mountain hut serves simple, hearty food, including meat stew, goulash, sausage, ham and eggs, polenta, bread with honey, wine, beer, tea and Turkish coffee. Prices range from €1.80 for tea to €7.50 for goulash. You'll need to make your own packed lunches for the hike as there are no huts along the way. You can buy food for this in town and then at your overnight hut. Most requirements including vegetarian and vegan diets can be accommodated.

What is the accommodation like?

Radovljica

You’ll stay at the Life Hostel in Radovljica, in twin/double rooms. All rooms have a private bathroom, air conditioning and free WiFi. Triple rooms can also be requested, subject to availability.

Select groups will stay at the alternative Hotel Pokljuka on the Pokljuka Plateau in ensuite twin/double rooms. The hotel has a restaurant and bar on site and offers free WiFi. This applies to groups starting on the following dates: Saturday 29th June 2024, Saturday 6th July 2024, Saturday 27th July 2024, Saturday 3rd August 2024 & Saturday 10th August 2024.

On the Trek

You’ll be staying in the Kredarica mountain hut on the slopes of Mount Triglav. The hut is basic but comfortable, with dormitory-style bunks, electricity, water, central heating and a restaurant serving a range of foods. Beds are equipped with pillows, sheets and blankets.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, private rooms are available on night 1 in the Life Hostel, subject to availability. It is not possible to have private accommodation in the mountain hut.

Transfers

Your host will meet everyone at Ljubljana Airport at 16:00 ready for the group transfer to your accommodation. On Day 3, you'll be dropped back off at the airport by approximately 18:00 - it's important to book flights that depart after 20:00 to ensure you aren't late for check-in. You can be dropped off in Bled or Ljubljana city centre on the way if you would prefer. If you arrive or depart outside these times, private transfers can be arranged - see Optional Extras for prices.

Travel options

There are regular flights to Ljubljana from major airports across the UK and Europe, with plenty of connection options for those heading to Slovenia from outside Europe.

Ljubljana is accessible by train via various routes across Europe. A popular and easy route from Western Europe is via Munich. You can travel by rail from there to Slovenia's capital, through beautiful Austrian scenery on daytime services or on a sleeper train from Munich-Ljubljana.

There is a frequent public bus service between Ljubljana city and Radovljica (1hr) and between Bled and Radovljica (15mins). The bus station in Radovljica is just across the street from your accommodation.

There are also frequent trains between Ljublijana city and Radovljica (50mins) and the train station is a 10 minute walk from your accommodation.

For groups staying in Pokljuka there is no public transport, however, in July and August, there is a free 'hop on, hop off’ bus line from Bled. Take the Poljuka line and get off at the second to last stop, which is Goreljek. Your hotel is about a 10 minute walk from there. Alternatively, your host can also arrange a complimentary pickup from Bled at 5pm on arrival day. Please request this with your host, if required.

Matt(November 2023)

A great experience but more challenging when compared to other treks with the same rating by MBA. Be prepared for a physically demanding day on the 2nd day, and pack lots of water.

Andrew(November 2023)

Fabulous views, well led, well surpassed my high expectations. Great mixed group too.

Charlotte(November 2023)

Really good guide, good trip. Well organised.

Hannah(November 2023)

A proper adventure! The exposure on the via ferrata is incredible & Triglav National Park is so beautiful! I would say this is a very challenging trip & you really really need a head for heights!

Chaz(November 2023)

fantastic trip, well organised, great staff, amazing location

Locky(November 2023)

An amazing experience. Beautiful hike, and the first time my partner and myself completed via ferrata. This was a challenging experience, but super rewarding, and we can't wait for the next one!

Rella(August 2023)

Slovenia is incredibly beautiful, and climbing Triglav is no exception. The views and countryside are unbeatable. This trip is 100% worth it but be warned that it is a lot more difficult than it sounds. The ascent is sharp and fast, with lots of scrambling, and even at 2500m, you really start to feel the thinner air in the exertion. I would treat this trip as 'tough' rather than 'challenging', as I've been on treks graded as 'challenging' by MBA and this one is certainly the hardest trek I've ever done!

Elina(July 2023)

Great hiking experience. Be ready that you can be hot with rain any time as rain and thunderstorms are quite common here. Luckily we managed to get an afternoon window to summit Triglav as 2nd day was raining all day. Triglav climb is safe and the paths are well maintained. Definitely take extra food for a mountain hut as options are limited and portions can be small. Overall Great experience even though no views at the summit.

Kirstin(June 2023)

Really fantastic trip! The climb to the summit was challenging but Andraz and Alenka were amazing guides! Would definitely recommend this trip!

Olivia(December 2022)

Great experience. Unfortunately myself and another member of the team were often left behind on the via Ferrata. The group splits into groups of 4 with a guide per group. In my group the guide often went on ahead with two members and left myself and another behind. I have experience so I wasn't concerned but this was the first mountain and via Ferrata for the other member of the group that was left with me. I ended up helping them to the top and asked the guide twice to keep the group together and they kept going on without us. Potentially a one off but could have been really dangerous. The main guide was amazing, very understanding and caring. I would recommend this trip, just to be aware that that was my experience. The mountain hut is a really incredible experience and the views are to die for. All in all a great trip with a great group.

Steve(October 2022)

Had a wonderful experience in Triglav national park, unfortunately book the the last weekend available and was beaten by the weather. We met up Katarina the host on Saturday evening, to be told that due to heavy snow forecast for Saturday evening and Sunday morning out attempt to the summit will not be possible. Our two fantastic guilds did manage to make the most of the opportunities left to us, and climbed Visevnik 2050m to get the best view of Triglav. Looking forward to returning next year in August to complete the challenge, hopefully with better weather. Final thankyou to Jani at the Jazz hotel and especially The wonderful breakfast they provide every day

Ivona(September 2022)

Perfectly organised weekend away with some stunning scenery. I don't think the hike up to Triglav Dom is that challenging for a fit person. Can't comment on the part of the trip to the actual peak of Triglav as the weather conditions didn't allow us to conquer the mountain!

Cris(September 2022)

This was challenging, as billed, although people of differing fitness levels will perceive it more or less so. It was a great intro to Via Ferrata. Slightly daunting, really exhilarating, always felt safe. The guide was really great, kept a good pace according to the group and was a really nice and interesting chap. He was joined by another guide throughout and they split the group in to two smaller groups for the final push to the summit, which we did after a short rest, on the same day, since we kept a good pace on the first stretch. Stunning views, all very well organised throughout, looking forward to the next much better adventure!

Amy(September 2022)

Fantastic trip, the via ferrata was a great experience and really made the climb memorable. Great group. The mountain refuge was comfortable. Would recommend bringing a headtorch as we started our summit climb before sunrise due to weather.

Gerald(September 2022)

Brilliant action-packed long weekend in the Slovenian Alps and a great introduction to via ferrata. We were fortunate to have a narrow weather window to make the summit attempt on Triglav - with the team up at 4.45am and safely back down at the Kredarica hut by 9 for a well-deserved hot breakfast! While not terribly physically demanding, the via ferrata section on Triglav is a serious climb with a fair amount of scrambling. If you're looking for a good dose of the outdoors in 3 days this is a great option and deservedly a staple of the Much Better Adventures offering.

Anthony(September 2022)

A great short trip, the first day is a decent hike and the second day provides a thrilling ascent up the steep and exposed ridge line. Note that there are nervy sections on the summit climb where the via ferrata guide wire is absent! Also, be sure to allow yourself enough time to take in the stunning Lake Bled before or after the trip.

Gerald(September 2022)

Triglav is truly an action-packed weekend. Stunning views of the Julian Alps, great food and company, and topped off with a via ferrata section on the summit attempt that'll be a highlight for any adventure seeker. We were lucky to make a successful summit attempt in a narrow weather window - leaving the mountain hut in pitch darkness and watching the sun rise over Triglav as we approached the summit has to be one of my best travel experiences. Much Better Adventures delivers yet again!

Kieran(August 2022)

Amazing, stunning scenery and the via Ferrata is not for the faint of heart! Such a thrill though! The hike is quite challenging but the views are second to none, loved it. Our guides were also really cool, had a few beers with them on the night!

Adam(August 2022)

Beautiful country and great people who looked after us. A good challenge and plenty of time to enjoy the views and meet others. The guides were of an excellent standard and borrowed kit was exactly what was needed. I would highly recommend this trip.

Priya(August 2022)

Hiking guides were incredible. Fun climb! Slovenia is beautiful, would recommend!

Trevor(August 2022)

Great trip overall for our first via ferrata experience. Hostel pre climb was fantastic - great breakfast and friendly staff. Guides were top notch. Would recommend.

Howard(August 2022)

SUPERB EXPERIENCE ! I organised a private group of 8 (generally experienced trekkers) for my 60th birthday, postponed two years by Covid. We had high expectations from the inspirational MBA website and I can say they were exceeded throughout. Communications were clear and courteous , and all arrangements ran without issue. The in-country extended team (Katarina , the guides and the hilarious owner at the Jazz Hotel) were a pleasure to deal with. Triglav is truly beautiful. It is marked as "challenging" and it certainly is - most of us had been to Killi, Nepal etc and notwithstanding the lower height, we all found it every bit as tough. The mountain hut is basic but the food was hearty and views unbeatable. Due to the flexibility of the MBA team, we even managed a cold plunge in beautiful Lake Bled on completing the descent. Finally, for the lifetime memories, I thought the pricing was extremely reasonable. YOLO so get it in the diary! HG

Colin(August 2022)

Great trip, guides were execellent, really enjoyable experience overall

Annie(August 2022)

Absolutely great hike/climb. Generally well organised trip. Our mountain guides were fabulous. The via ferrata is an amazing experience. The hostel in bled was amazing. The mountain hut is very cozy, be prepared to share a bed with a stranger! Also bring plenty of food as the options are limited and its a tough hike! But a great experience all round and great value for money!

Liam(June 2022)

Brilliant trip from start to finish, The guides were fantastic helping on the via ferrata to summit Triglav. All of the accommodation was brilliant in the towns and the mountain hut, food was perfect especially up in the mountain hut after a tiring trek up. Amazing country and I'd reccomend the trip to anyone!

N(October 2021)

Personally did not enjoy this trip. Do not expect to be able to take many breaks on this hike and disregard the estimated times provided in the local itinerary: The ascent stage for us was just over 5 hours to the mountain hut. Descent approximately 4.5h. Fine for those that want a speed challenge.

Anna(September 2021)

Interesting and challenging. Wonderful nature, kind people.

Antony(September 2020)

Everything was fantastic and well organised, a great group of people and all the guides and hosts were professional and a good laugh.

John(September 2020)

Great trek, amazing and fun guides and group. Couldn’t stop laughing!

Arefin(October 2019)

Our guides Ziga and Din were fantastic people. They climbed many mountains themselves and now helping others to do so. Our host Katarina was a superstar.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 41kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

The hike is challenging and suitable for reasonably fit hikers comfortable walking for up to 8 hours a day. You will need to walk 8 hours uphill on day 2, then a via ferrata climb using cables and ladders to the summit, followed by a 2000m descent on day 3. No previous via ferrata experience is required.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

The climbing season for Mount Triglav is from July through October, though early and late season ascents are also possible. Summer weather on Triglav is quite cool; when it's pushing 30°C on the Slovenian plains, it may be just 5°C on Triglav. It often drops below freezing at night, and snow may persist in nooks and crannies throughout the year. Weather on the mountain is highly variable, bringing unexpected wind, rain and snow.

Of course. You can leave your extra luggage with your hosts whilst you are on the hike. Excess luggage must be either tied together or clearly labelled with your name. Please remember to take another, smaller backpack with you on the hike.

Our recommended travel insurance provider is Campbell Irvine.

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures and you are required to provide your policy information before departing.

Your insurance should include adequate protection for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment and the specific activities involved on your adventure. We also strongly recommend it includes cancellation and curtailment insurance, should you be unable to join your trip for specific reasons such as illness.

We fully endorse Campbell Irvine as their insurance offers all of the above, so get in touch with them or call on 020 7938 1734 to get your insurance sorted. We suggest that you book travel insurance as soon as you book your adventure, just to cover you for any last-minute life changes. We know you’re an active lot and injuries do happen!

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy (18+) as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. Children can be accommodated on some private departures.

You're always in good company on one of our adventures.

Our trips are typically made up of a mixture of solo travellers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.

It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

Don't just take our word for it:

  • 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
  • 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
