What to Expect

Friday: Arrival and Skradinski Buk biking tour

Your host will meet you in Split either in the city center or at the airport, and drive you to your accommodation in Skradin, a small town at the entrance to Krka River National Park.

After checking in you’ll explore the park by bicycle, riding to the phenomenal 44m high Skradinski Buk waterfall. Go for a swim, enjoy a picnic lunch, and take plenty of pictures before biking back to Skradin along the Krka River.

1.5 hours driving, 1 hour biking

Saturday: Zrmanja River kayaking or rafting

After breakfast you’ll drive to the village of Kastel Zegarski where you’ll put into the river. You’ll either raft or kayak depending on conditions. Return to Skradin in the evening to enjoy the town.

1.5 hours driving, 4 - 5 hours rafting or kayaking

Sunday: Rafting the Cetina River and departure

Croatia is a diverse country that seems custom made for outdoor adventure. Its capital, Zagreb, is a small and scenic city surrounded by hills. Cobblestone alleys and winding streets lend the city a medieval feel, especially in its Old Town neighborhood. Cafes, churches and parks abound.

In the Dalmatia region of Croatia is the town of Skradin. The town (population 4,000) has a distinctly Mediterranean feel, featuring narrow, winding streets and charming plazas. The entire town centre is a protected cultural monument.

Near Skradin, Krka River National Park is famous for its series of jaw-dropping waterfalls. They cascade down the canyon, one after the other, providing the perfect backdrop for a refreshing swim.

Paklenica National Park is also nearby. The park is famous for its massive Velika Paklenica canyon, a dramatic gorge that narrows to just 50m across at one point.

Croatian cuisine is quite diverse. Popular meals include charcuterie, meat and vegetable stews, gnocchi, sweet potato dumplings and cottage cheese with sour cream. Meat is typically chicken or veal. In coastal regions you’ll find more Mediterranean food and seafood.

Vegetarian diets can be catered for, but Croatian cuisine is based around foods like pasta, bread and dumplings, so gluten-free diets are difficult to accommodate.

You need to have a good level of fitness for this tour. The hiking is easy to moderate on well-maintained paths. The kayaking and rafting are class II and III; no previous experience is required.

Down on the Dalmatian coast the weather is a little warmer and drier than in Zagreb. Spring and fall temperatures range from 9 – 21 °C with roughly 10 days of rain per month. Summer temperatures range from 16 – 30 °C with just 6 days of rain per month.

Bring comfortable, wicking clothing suitable for athletic activities. A swimsuit and towel are necessary for the watersports. Neoprene shorts and booties are provided for kayaking if the weather is cold. Also bring a water bottle, sun protection, and a small rucksack to carry personal items.
