Explore the diverse terrain of Monterosa with a day each of freeride skiing, ski mountaineering and ski touring. 1 ½ days off work.

The Monterosa ski resort in Italy is home to incredible skiing as well as authentic Italian cuisine and hospitality. You’ll spend your days on the slopes enjoying multiple types of off-piste skiing, and your evenings relaxing in comfort in the town of Alagna. Your hassle-free trip includes:

This is the perfect long weekend for avid skiers seeking diverse ski terrain and the comfort of quality accommodation and food after a long day. This trip is designed for experienced skiers comfortable making fast, tight turns on red and black runs. Previous off-piste and ski touring experience is recommended but not required. No previous ski mountaineering experience required.

What to Expect

Thursday: Arrival

Your host will meet you at the airport in Milan. Enjoy a scenic 2-hour drive to the mountain town of Alagna.

Check into your 3-star accommodation, enjoy a delicious Italian dinner, and spend the rest of the evening relaxing.

Friday: Freeride skiing

Enjoy a tasty breakfast, then walk just a few short minutes from your hotel to the base of the lifts. You’ll meet your guide, go over equipment and the plan, and catch the first cable car to the top.

Spend the day skiing the Balma run, one of the best off-piste runs in the Monterosa area.

Take a break in Pastore Refuge for lunch with a view, then wrap up the afternoon with a final run. Ski back to town for dinner and a relaxing evening.

No climbing, 3000+m descent

Saturday: Ski mountaineering

Catch the first cable car to the top, then head across the glacier to try your hand at ski mountaineering. Your guide will pick the best peak to climb given the conditions and the group’s ability.

You’ll ascend mixed terrain to the summit, marvel at the view, then descend a steep (40-45°) couloir with your guide on hand to provide advice and tips.

Ski back to Pastore Refuge for a celebratory lunch, then descend the rest of the way to Alagna for the evening.

1.5 hours climbing, 2000m descent

Sunday: Ski touring and departure

Take the early cable car again, then head into the Otro Valley for a morning of ski touring. You’ll get to know the local Walser culture and pass through well-preserved ancient settlements.

Break for lunch in the Zar Senni refuge in Otro village, then descend the fabulous Camoscetta run back to Alagna, arriving in mid-afternoon.

Your host will transfer you back to the airport to catch your flight home.

1.5 hours climbing, 1700m descent

Accommodation

You will be staying at a 3-star hotel in Alagna with half-board (breakfast and dinner). The hotel was built in 1932 and been renovated into a modern and elegant accommodation.

The hotel features an onsite restaurant, ensuite rooms, a heated pool and sauna, wifi and satellite TV.

Alagna is a small ski village located at 1191m in the Valsesia valley in the Italian Alps. The area was first settled by the Walser in the 12th Century, and their culture is still reflected in the traditional stone and wood architecture.

The Monterosa ski resort surrounds Alagna. The resort is covers three adjacent valleys and includes over 180km of runs. Much of the area is part of the Alta Valsesia Natural Park, which protects many of the cultural and natural features of the valleys. Monterosa is ringed by 20 of the highest (4000m+) peaks in the Alps, providing breathtaking views from every angle.

Start point?
You will be met at the Milan-Malpensa Airport. If you book on an open group you need to arrive by 19:00. For private groups the latest you can arrive is 20:30. Your host will be in touch before the trip to finalise details.

Your tour will end at the Milan-Malpensa Airport. You are free to book any flight departing after 18:30. Your host will be in touch before the trip to finalise details.

This trip will run with a minimum of 4 people, and a maximum of 7. Please note, if there are not 4 people booked the trip may be rearranged or cancelled.

Sure can! A lot of people do, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our Epic Weekends are very social in nature and we’ve seen lots of new friendships born out of them. Expect a mix of solo travelers and very small groups of 2 or 3, all with a shared appreciation of escaping the city for the great outdoors to try something new and meet new people.

You need to have a good level of fitness and be able to ski for 5 – 6 hours each day.

You’ll be skiing with professional mountain guides that know Alagna like the backs of their hands. To ensure maximum fun, but also maintain safety and security, the guide to skier ratio will never exceed 1:7.

Alagna has simple and authentic alpine and Italian food that you’re sure to enjoy. Your hotel has a restaurant onsite that serves traditional cuisine with many natural and local ingredients, and wines from the surrounding area including Gattinara DOCG.

Alagna in the winter is cold, sunny and snowy—good conditions for skiing! From January to March the temperatures range from -5 to 10 °C, and average monthly snowfall is 50cm.

Aside from avalanche safety and climbing equipment you’ll need to provide all your own gear. Rentals can be arranged in Alagna.
