What to Expect

Thursday: Arrival and Mostar tour

Arrive at Dubrovnik airport at 13:00 where your transport will meet you. Drive to Bjelasnica with a first day stop along the way to explore Mostar. The charming city is famous for its 16th Century single-arch Ottoman bridge over the Neretva River.

There your transport will leave you in front of the restaurant where you will have dinner that night, so you can have free time for yourself to enjoy sightseeing Mostar’s Old Town. Around 19:30 you will be welcomed by your guide, in front of the aforementioned traditional restaurant serving local, authentic meals.

Spend a night in Mostar and rest up for tomorrow’s adventure.

3,5 Hours driving, 1 – 2 hours sightseeing

Friday: Biking and hiking Bjelasnica

After breakfast you will start your adventure. You will be driven from Mostar to the starting point. You’ll take a scenic and relaxed mountain bike ride to the remote village of Lukomir, stopping often to rest and enjoy the amazing views. Lukomir is the highest and most remote village in the country, and its residents still dress in traditional attire. Here we’ll stop for lunch.

From Lukomir you’ll hike to the edge of the Rakitnica River, passing through sweeping meadows and lush beech forests along the way. Follow the canyon’s edge to the very traditional village of Umoljani where you’ll stop to explore the local mosque and necropolis.

Continue on to your accommodation in the mountains to enjoy clear night skies and a fresh, locally produced dinner.

Saturday: Climbing in Rakitnica Canyon, Blagaj city tour

After breakfast you’ll cross over the Rakitnica River to access the limestone cliffs on the other side. You’ll review the basics and safety of rock climbing, then spend the next few hours climbing the canyon any way you like. Ascend, rappel, and hike alongside the emerald waters of the Rakitnica River. When you’re done, enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh trout.

Drive to Blagaj in the afternoon to explore the unique city. Blagaj was built around a remarkable Dervish monastery at the headwater spring of the Buna River. The city is also home to a medieval fortress and a vulture sanctuary.

You’ll spend your last night in a Mostar city, that is near to Blagaj.

Location

Bjelasnica is a mountain in north-central Bosnia and Herzegovina that dominates the horizon. Its highest peak tops out at 2067m, and several smaller peaks cluster around it. The mountain is framed by the Rakitnica and Neretva Rivers. The landscape is varied and beautiful, with sweeping meadows, limestone rock formations, cold mountain streams, and dense beech forests.

The village of Lukomir near the top of Bjelasnica is the highest (1495m) and most remote village in the country. The village has a long history, and traditional buildings and dress are still a part of Lukomir today. The town’s collection of Stecci (medieval gravestones) from the 14th and 15th Century are sure to amaze you.

You’ll also have a chance to explore the cities of Mostar and Blagaj, both of which have fascinating histories. Their architecture has a strong Ottoman influence, and the Stari Most (“Old Bridge”) in Mostar is considered one of the finest examples of Ottoman bridges in the Balkans.
