What to Expect

Thursday: Arrival

You’ll be met at the Dubrovnik airport by your host and transferred 3-4 hours to your accommodation on the banks of the Piva River.

Settle into your cabin in a beech forest and wander along the river.

Relax around a campfire, listen to the babbling river, and socialize with your fellow adventurers while a cook prepares your dinner.

Friday: Rafting

Enjoy a hearty breakfast on the river’s shore, then take a scenic drive across the Piva Mountains to the launch point upstream. You’ll travel through mountain villages and passes with incredible views.

Stop at the Great Bridge of Djurdjevica Tara to look down on the Tara River—you’ll be passing beneath this bridge later today!

While you’re there, get your heart pumping with a zipline ride across the deepest canyon in Europe.

Continue on to Sljivankso to start your rafting trip. After a safety briefing and a quick lesson on technique, you’ll launch onto the Tara River for 5 hours of paddling.

Along the way you’ll view the largest natural spring in Europe, pass beneath the 165m bridge you visited earlier, check out a monastery, and paddle through a section of canyon that’s just 4m across.

Around 17:00 you’ll arrive at Eco-Lodge Radovan Luka, your home for the night. Your personal belongings are awaiting you in your room.

Freshen up, explore the beautiful grounds of the lodge, and enjoy a delicious Montenegrin meal. Spend the evening relaxing around a campfire before heading to bed.

5 hours of rafting, class IIIII

Saturday: Rafting

After a hearty breakfast you’ll paddle the most scenic and wild section of the Tara River where it passes through Durmitor National Park.

You’ll navigate exhilarating class III, IV and some V rapids. These rapids are fun and challenging, but with yesterday’s paddling experience you’ll be more than ready to tackle them.

Along the way you’ll take a break in the traditional village of Tepca, raft through the deepest section of the canyon, and stop at the magnificent Bajlovica waterfall.

Your rafting adventure finishes at Scepan Polje. Drive back to the eco-lodge where you spent your first night. The cooks await you with a delicious meal.

Relax around the campfire and swap stories with fellow adventurers about your amazing experience on the Tara River.

5 hours of rafting, class III - V

Sunday: Departure

Linger over breakfast and take a final stroll along the Piva River, then transfer to Podgorica Airport (2 hours) for your flight home.

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, weather conditions and forecasts, special events, etc.

Accommodation

You’ll spend the first and last night at your host’s eco-lodge on the banks of the Piva River. You’ll either stay in a new wooden bungalow or in a twin bedroom in the main building. The cabins are built in the style of Montenegrin pioneer cabins, with the addition of a few contemporary comforts like private baths, hot water and comfy beds.

You’ll spend the middle night at Eco-Lodge Radovan Luka. This rustic lodge is operated by the National Park. It’s a real back-to-nature experience with campfires, BBQ, stargazing and limited electricity. Rooms are cosy twins with private ensuite bathrooms.

Northwestern Montenegro has not yet been discovered by much of the world, but is rightly acclaimed and protected as a World Heritage Area. It was formed by glaciers and is traversed by rivers and underground streams, leaving a dramatic landscape marked by dense pine forests, clear lakes, limestone plateaus and deep canyons.

The area is home to 1500 species of plants; large mammals including the brown bear, grey wolf, European wildcat and river otter; and 130 recorded birds including the Golden Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Honey Buzzard, Peregrine Falcon, Capercaillie and Black Grouse.

The Tara canyon is the deepest and longest in Europe, cutting through dramatic limestone cliffs. The 2009 World Rafting Championships took place here. There are rocky and pebbly terraces, sandy beaches, high cliffs, and immense waterfalls along the canyon. The Tara River is so pure you can drink it straight from the raft!
