Arctic Hike and Puppy Training

Explore an Arctic island, play with sled-dog puppies, and spend your nights in traditional Lavvu tents. 1 day off work.

Summer in the Arctic is an experience not to be missed. Blue skies, long days, and loads of wildlife, flowers and berries will make you forget how far north you are. Your base is a dog-sledding centre in Tromso where new puppies are waiting to be trained and played with. Take a daytrip to Håkøya Island for hiking, berry picking, fire building, elk tracking and more. Spend your nights on reindeer furs in a traditional Lavvu teepee. Your Arctic family adventure includes:

  • 2 nights of accommodation in traditional Lavvu tents
  • 1 day of guided hiking and exploring on Håkøya Island
  • 1 day of training and playing with sled-dog puppies
  • Most meals
  • Professional, experienced, local guides
  • Airport transfers and activity transfers

Perfect for:
Families of any ages who love nature, exploring, and, of course, puppies! You’ll spend time outdoors and in the small city of Tromso, and the Lavvu tents are extremely comfortable, so it’s a great way for novices to get into nature without a huge commitment.

What to Expect

The Plan

Friday: Arrival and bonfire

Pack up and catch a flight to Tromso, the northernmost city in the world.

Your host is waiting to bring you to the dog-sledding centre where your Arctic experience begins.

Settle into your lavish Lavvu tent, then gather around the bonfire and help your hosts cook a delicious, fresh meal. Roast marshmallows under the Midnight Sun for dessert.

Head to bed in your Lavvu and fall asleep on cozy reindeer furs.

Saturday: Arctic hiking adventure

Wake up to a hearty breakfast, then drive across to Håkøya Island.

Spend the day hiking the island at a casual pace. Today is all about learning, fun and exploration. If you like dogs you can even bring a four-legged friend with you for the day.

You’ll hike among forests, meadows and hills, picking fresh berries along the way. Track wild elk and see if you can spot them resting in the shade.

When it’s lunchtime your guide will teach you to build a fire in nature, and you’ll cook your own sausages over the flames.

Hike back to the car while keeping an eye out for majestic sea eagles—there’s a nesting pair on the island.

Head into Tromso to spend the afternoon in the charming city centre. There’s a lot to check out, including Polaria, the world’s most northerly aquarium; the Fjellheisen cable car; and the fun and interactive Science Centre.

Eat dinner in town or return to the dog-sledding centre for a tasty meal of bacaloa.

5 hours of hiking and exploring on Håkøya Island

Puppy training and departure

Today is a special treat: helping train the sled-dog puppies.

Sled-dogs are in training all year round, even when there’s no snow, and summer is especially important for the new pups to learn teamwork.

Meet the puppies in the yard, then join experienced dog handlers on a hike around the property with puppies aged 4 weeks to 6 months.

Help the pups socialize (i.e. cuddle and play with them!), and run them through training exercises. Which dogs do you think will grow up to be the next lead stars?

Head back to base for lunch, then pack up and return to the airport. Perhaps you’ll return next summer to see the pups all grown up!

4 hours puppy training

Note: The actual itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, weather conditions and forecasts, special events, etc.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in a traditional communal Sami tent. The tent is a peaked wooden structure with room to sleep 10-12 people. Sleeping bags and reindeer hides are provided to keep you extra warm. Toilets are in an adjacent building. A private tent that sleeps up to 4 people can be arranged at additional cost. Inquire at booking.

The contrast of modern city with old wooden buildings backed with views of the fjords and the Northern Lights are sure to captivate you. The dog-sledding centre is located half an hour outside town.

Håkøya is a small island just offshore from Tromso. A few people live on the island’s edges, but the interior is a wild mix of forests and meadows perfect for exploring. Lots of elk live on the island, and if you’re lucky you’ll be able to track and watch some.

Summers in Tromso are very pleasant. Daytime temperatures average 11 - 17 °C, and it cools off to 6 - 11 °C at night.
