Leave the mainland far behind and embark on an unforgettable adventure on the Great Barrier Reef. You’ll explore exclusive dive sites that are home to incredible marine life, including colourful corals, endless fish, and majestic sea turtles. Relax between dives on the spacious sundeck with a cold drink, and fall asleep at night to the sound of waves. Your diving adventure includes:

  • 3 days of SCUBA diving (10 certified dives or 3 intro dives + snorkeling)
  • 2 nights accommodation on the Kangaroo Explorer liveaboard dive boat

What to Expect

Day 1: Arrive and dive

Your hosts will pick you up bright and early from your hotel in Cairns. Wave goodbye to the mainland and set sail on the Sunkist for the outer reefs.

By 10:00 you’re on board the Kangaroo Explorer the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Take a moment to appreciate the fact that you’re not in the office. Doesn’t that feel nice?

Lunch and orientation, then it’s time to lose yourself in the wonders of the underwater world with your first dive.

Back on board to move to a different site. Relax on the sundeck on the way. There’s nothing but sun, blue skies and sparkling water as far as the eye can see.

One more dive followed by a delicious dinner on board, then a night-dive that you can’t miss.

Back on deck it’s time to celebrate your epic Friday with a cold drink.

3 certified dives or 1 intro dive + snorkeling

Day 2: Dive, dive, dive

Wake up in time to catch the sunrise, then jump in for a refreshing morning dive.

Back on deck for breakfast while the Kangaroo Explorer moves to a new site. Your hosts have exclusive access to 19 incredible dive sites, each one its own unique ecosystem.

At the next site you have three opportunities to dive. Flip through a fish ID chart between dives, or go snorkeling and view colourful corals from the surface.

Dig into a well-deserved dinner, then follow up with another night dive.

Back on board you can grab a drink and stay up chatting with new friends under the stars.

4 dives (6 opportunities), or 1 intro dive + snorkeling

Day 3: Dive and head home

Wake up with a refreshing early-morning dive, then climb back aboard for breakfast en route to the next site.

Two more dives before lunch, then one final dive to end your adventure.

Enjoy the ride back to the mainland on the Sunkist. Your trip is over, but you’ll definitely be dreaming of the sea for days to come.

Accommodation

You’ll spend two nights on board the Kangaroo Explorer, a 25m catamaran kitted out as a top-notch liveaboard dive boat. There are 16 cabins on board, each with AC, carpeting, and ensuite facilities. There’s a spacious saloon for dining, a licensed bar, and a beautiful sundeck. Overall the boat sleeps 36 guests plus crew.

Located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Reserve, the Kangaroo Explorer provides access to numerous pristine reefs. Your professional guides and skippers know exactly where to go to find the best possible diving conditions. They have some of the oldest and most sought after permits in the region, giving you exclusive access to 19 coveted dive sites. You’ll see something new and incredible every time you get in the water.

Some examples of marine life you might encounter include angelfish, damselfish, sweetlips, butterflyfish, parrot fish, sea stars, sea cucumbers, rays, giant clams, nudibranchs, reef sharks and barracudas, and a wide range of hard and soft corals including sea fans, sea whips, tree and vase corals, and plate corals.

Getting there and away?
Cairns Airport (CNS) is served by inexpensive, direct flights from most major hubs in Australia. You’ll need to arrive on Thursday in order to meet your hosts at 06:45 on Friday morning. You must wait 24 hours to fly after multiple dives, so schedule your flight home to depart no earlier than midday on Monday. We will contact you before you leave to check your arrival and departure plans.

This trip run every day, so the minimum is just 1 person. There will be a maximum of 36 people on board the dive boat.

Sure can! A lot of people do, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

You’ll be diving the world-famous Great Barrier Reef in the heart of the marine reserve. Your hosts have exclusive access to 19 sites, including moorings at Thetford Reef, Milln Reef, Moore Reef, Sudbury Reef, Elford Reef, Channel Reef and Briggs Reef. You’ll encounter sand cays, drop offs, walls, bommies and swim-throughs. Some sites are especially good for night dives. Depths typically range from 5m to 30m.

If you’ve never dived before you’ll book the base package which includes three introductory dives over the course of the trip.

If you already have PADI Open Water or higher certification, you’ll book the certified diver upgrade which includes 10 dives.

Certified dives are not guided, though a qualified dive guide can be arranged on board for an additional $15 per person per dive. Guiding is included for intro dives.

Meals on board the Kangaroo Explorer are included from lunch on Friday through lunch on Sunday. Meals are prepared fresh on board, and most dietary needs can be catered to.

Temperatures average 24 – 31 °C in the summer and 19 – 25 °C in the winter. The climate is tropical, but cooling sea breezes make the weather more pleasant offshore than it is in Cairns.

All diving and snorkeling gear is included. You can bring your own dive equipment, but you won’t save any money doing so.

Your host recommends you pack:

  • Swimmers
  • 2 towels
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses and sunblock)
  • Snacks
  • Long-sleeve top for breezy evenings
  • Dive card and dive log

Please limit your bags to carry-on size only. Large suitcases and backpacks cannot be taken on board.
