Located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Reserve, Fitzroy Island is a paradise of narrow sand beaches, dense tropical rainforest, and sky-blue sea. The island itself is protected as a National Park, so the reefs are in excellent condition and you’ll likely see turtles in addition to myriad colourful reef fish.

Beyond Fitzroy Island lie the outer reefs. Your professional guides and skippers know exactly where to go to find the best possible snorkeling conditions. They have some of the oldest and most sought after permits in the region, giving you exclusive access to 19 coveted dive sites. You’ll see something new and incredible every time you get in the water.

Some examples of marine life you might encounter include angelfish, damselfish, sweetlips, butterflyfish, parrot fish, sea stars, sea cucumbers, rays, giant clams, nudibranchs, reef sharks and barracudas, and a wide range of hard and soft corals including sea fans, sea whips, tree and vase corals, and plate corals.

SUP, short for stand-up paddle boarding, is a fun and surprisingly peaceful activity. Balancing is easy on such large boards, so all you have to do is paddle yourself across the water and enjoy the unique perspective.

Professional guides will teach you how to enter and exit the water, how to stand and balance correctly, and how to propel yourself around with minimal effort. But most of all you’ll just have fun!

You’ll paddle to Shark Fin Bay, Little Fitzroy and Hidden beach, beyond the boundaries of normal hire groups. At each destination you’ll get in the water and snorkel with a huge array of reef fish, small reef sharks and green sea turtles.

You’ll be snorkeling the world-famous Great Barrier Reef in the heart of the marine reserve. From the fringe reefs on Fitzroy Island to the outer reefs, you’ll get to see a range of remarkable marine life.

If you’ve not snorkeled before you’ll probably find it easy, and guides are there to help you get comfortable.

No particular level of fitness is needed, and no previous experience is required for snorkeling or SUP.

Meals on board the Kangaroo Explorer are included from lunch on Saturday through lunch on Sunday. Meals are prepared fresh on board, and most dietary needs can be catered to.

Temperatures on Fitzroy Island average 24 – 31 °C in the summer and 19 – 25 °C in the winter. The climate is tropical, but cooling sea breezes make the weather more pleasant offshore than it is in Cairns.

Your host will provide all the gear for SUP (paddle board and paddle) and snorkeling (mask, snorkel, fins and stinger suit).

Your host recommends you pack:

  • Swimmers
  • 2 towels
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses and sunblock)
  • Snacks
  • Long-sleeve top for breezy evenings
  • Dive card and dive log (if you’re diving)

Please limit your bags to carry-on size only. Large suitcases and backpacks cannot be taken on board.
