Need To Know

The following are not included in the trip price:

  • Flights to Lombok
  • Accommodation after the tour
  • Travel insurance
  • Tips for your guide (optional)

This trip will run with a minimum of 1 people and a maximum of 10. There will be 1 guide for a max of 4 hikers.

The lower slopes of Rinjani are relatively gentle and easy, and the temperature is warm. As you climb the terrain becomes more challenging. Some sections through the forest are steep and slippery, even exceeding 50-degree slopes. Above treeline the ground is loose and ashy—think two steps forward, one step back.

Hikers with an average level of fitness can usually make it to the crater rim, but going up and down in a day is tough. Previous hiking experience is required.

Your hosts are very eco-conscious. They pack everything out, including human waste, are adamant about not littering, and encourage travelers and guides to clean up the mountain as they go.

Your guides and porters will cook delicious, fresh meals for you throughout the trip—and plenty of it. Examples include mee goreng (fried noodles) and nasi goreng (fried rice) with veggies, egg and meat; curries; fried bananas; pancakes; popcorn; and biscuits. Hot drinks are always available, and you’re provided with 3L of water per person per day.

Absolutely, just let us know at booking.

In Senaru (elevation 600m) temperatures range very little from 29 – 31 °C during the day and 22 – 23 °C at night.

The sun shines pretty much every day from April to October. November and December are a bit wetter but still dry enough to have an enjoyable trip. From January to March the mountain is closed for the monsoons.

Your host will provide water, food and cooking and eating utensils. Porters will carry all this equipment. They can also provide a rain coat on request.

You are advised to travel as light as possible. The remaining luggage can be stored at your guides’ office and picked up when you leave.

On Rinjani you’ll hike in warm, humid conditions at the base and cold, windy conditions at the summit. The sun is powerful even when it’s cold out, so don’t skimp on sunblock. Please pack the following:

  • Light-weight, breathable hiking shirts and long trousers
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Warm jacket (fleece, wool or down/synthetic)
  • Thermal top and bottom
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses and sunscreen)
  • Bug repellent
  • Sturdy, broken in hiking shoes or boots
  • Swimsuit and small towel
  • Head torch

Topping out at 3726m, Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia. Mt Rinjani is part of the ‘Ring of Fire,’ a section of fault lines that stretches through Japan and south-east Asia. Volcanic Ash makes for fertile ground, allowing rainforest to dominate the volcano’s lower slopes. As you breach the treeline, you can see the neighbouring Bali and Sumbawa, as well as the crater’s magma heated lake.

The town of Senaru is the gateway to this Rinjani trek, however it has managed to retain its cultural identity. The Sasak people’s belief’s are a fusion of Islam and animism.

What to Expect

Day 1: Arrival

Get picked up from anywhere in Lombok, and get driven to the gateway village of Senaru.

On arrival, you’ll be greeted by your guides, porters and enjoy some welcome drinks.

You’ll be briefed about the hike, before getting an early night before the big ascent.

If you arrive in the early afternoon, you’ll have the option of visiting the beautiful Sindang Gile and Tiu Kelap Waterfall.

Day 2: The Sunrise Ascent

Wake up at around 01.30 for some fuel before the fun begins. Your guide will pick you up at around 02.30 to take you to the start of your trek in Senaru Village (600m).

The first part of the trek will be through tropical rainforest, where you may hear the shy, black monkeys swinging in the treetops. You won’t see them however, it’s still the middle of the night.

You’ll first pass Post 1, at 1500m. The rainforest will start to thin. You may be able to see the milky way if you have a clear night.

Once you pass Post 3 (Mondokan Lokok) at 2000m, you’ll breach the treeline, and be met by steeper gravel slopes. You’re almost there at this point.

After a steeper ascent, you’ll finally reach the crater rim just before sunrise. You’ll be relieved to hear you’ll get a second breakfast, so you can enjoy the imminent sunrise on a full stomach.

After taking in the sunrise on the stunning pinnacle of your hike, you can choose to scramble down the scree for a dip in the magma heated lake before your descent.

Don’t be disheartened when slipper-clad porters sail past you with their load balanced on one shoulder.

You’ll be able to enjoy views that were obscured by the night, before arriving back in Senaru for 15.00 in time for your transfer to the next destination.

Around 12 hours of hiking, with an ascent and descent of 2000m each way.

Please note: The actual itinerary and the duration are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, weather conditions and forecasts.

Accommodation

On your first night, you’ll stay at a local hotel. The accommodation will be simple but very clean and feature ensuite rooms, running water, a fan or AC, and wifi. One of accommodation used by your guides is Rinjani Light House a tasteful traditional guest house located in Senaru at the foot of Mt Rinjani.

While on the mountain you’ll camp. Your porters will carry and set everything up for you, including tents, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, and a toilet tent.

Please note, the exact accommodation before the trek will be determined by availability.
