Mt Bromo, Ijen Crater and Turtle Hatching Adventure

Watch sunrise over Bromo, discover the blue flames of Ijen, then head to the beach to watch and release hatching turtles. 4 days.

Explore two of Java’s most famous active volcanoes, smouldering Mount Bromo and the blue flames of Mount Ijen. You’ll use road transport to minimise strenuous treks, and you’ll have the chance to release baby turtles into the wild at Meru Betiri National Park on the last day. Along the way you’ll experience rural Java at its most beautiful, a dramatic landscape of infinite terraces. Your trip includes:

  • 4-day adventure
  • Passionate local, English speaking guide
  • 3 nights in simple accommodation
  • Road transport throughout
  • All park fees and entrance tickets
  • Mineral water
  • Pick up in Surabaya
  • Drop off in Surabaya or Bali

Perfect for: Anyone in good health with a reasonable level of fitness, and the drive to get up and go before sunrise to see some of the Earth’s natural wonders.

What to Expect

Day 1: Arrival

You will be collected from Surabaya Airport or your hotel around noon in a private car for the five-hour drive to the Mount Bromo area.

Explore the village at your own pace and pick a local restaurant for dinner. Be sure to get an early night, you’re in for some very early starts in the next few days!

Day 2: Sunrise over Bromo

Wake up at 03:00 in the morning to take a jeep to Pananjakan Point. You’ll need to walk the last mile to see the sunrise which does, of course, depend on the weather. All being well, you’ll faced with one of the most iconic volcanic vistas on planet earth. From the viewing spot, watch the sun rise with Bromo and Batok smouldering in the crater below, and Java’s highest peak Semeru brooding and smoking in the background. Once it’s light, hike down into the crater and across the famous ‘Sea of Sand’ to peer into the Bromo crater itself (3km).

Return to the hotel for breakfast and check out at around 10.00. It’s a five-hour drive to Ijen, so you’ll break the journey with a leisurely lunch at a beach side restaurant at Pasir Putih Beach.

Day 3: Ijen Crater and Blue Flames

Wake at 01:00 in the morning to see Mount Ijen’s blue flame panorama at its best. Your guide will pick you up for the 1 to 1.5 hour drive through plantations and rainforest to the base of Ijen. From the parking bay, start the steep 1.5 hour hike in the dark to reach the peak of Ijen Crater (2883 meters).

There is a tough descent down into the caldera to witness the blue flames (condition dependent) and to get down to the spectacular turquoise, acidic lake. Here you’ll need a mask to protect against volcanic fumes. Be prepared for it to be unpleasant at times, but that’s part of the experience right?

The Ijen Crater is famous for another reason too. This is the site of a working sulphur mine. Sulphur is extracted here, and used among other things as a cosmetic ingredient to treat acne, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, eczema and dandruff. The mineral found specifically at the Ijen Crater is known to be purer and more desirable.

Mining sulphur is very hazardous. Your guide used to be a sulphur miner, however now he can sustain his family off running tours up the mountain.

Ascend back to the crater rim to take in the spectacular views that are unfolding as the sun rises, and then start the decent back to car.

Return to your hotel at around 10:00 to check out. It’s a five-hour drive to Sukamade through the famous plantations of East Java and the Meru Betiri National Park. There’s no great rush: the best time to watch turtles spawning is after dark.

Accommodation tonight is in a simple guest house in the Meru Betiri National Park.

Day 4: Release baby turtles into the sea

Wake up for 05.00 to release baby turtles struggling to make it into the waves. After breakfast at 06:30, drive to Surabaya or Bali.

Accommodation

Your accommodation in Bromo is the Cafe Lava Hostel. This simple yet comfortable accommodation is equipped with coffee and tea makers, an LED TV and hot showers in each room.

Location

View map

Mount Bromo and Ijen are part of the ‘Ring of Fire,’ a section of fault lines that stretches through Japan and south-east Asia. Volcanic Ash makes for fertile ground, allowing rainforest to dominate the volcano’s lower slopes. Both are active: the landscapes you’ll see at the top are otherworldly scenes of barren rock and lava.

Both are found on the island of Java, the most populous in Indonesia. The landscape is stunning, with endless rice terraces contouring every slope, painting vivid stripes of green and a verdant, tropical background. Distances on this tour are significant, so you’ll have plenty of time to drink in the views and also the chance to spend time on the beach.

Meru Betiri National Park is a national park on the south of East Java, extending over an area of 580 km2. The beaches of the park provide nesting grounds for endangered turtle species such as leatherback turtles, hawksbill turtles, green turtles, and olive ridley turtles.

On this tour vehicles do much of the work. The hikes into the caldera of both Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen require good levels of fitness, a sense of balance and strength in the legs. Though at lower altitudes Java is invariably hot nights and early mornings at higher altitudes can be bracing.

A reasonable level of fitness is needed to attain the summit of Bromo and to climb down the caldera of Ijen.

You’ll be provided with breakfasts at the hotel, which will consist of a simple buffet breakfast of fruit salads, cereals, rice and soups. Your host will provide snacks along the way, and you’ll be able to stop at a restaurant of your choice on the mountain. Typical food to be found at Indonesian restaurants include rice, traditional curries and local dishes such as ‘Ayam Goreng’ and ‘Babur Ayam’, (types of Malaysian chicken curry.)

Absolutely, just let us know at booking.

The temperature in Java stays between 29 – 31 °C during the day and slightly cooler at night. On the summit of Bromo or Ijen, however, the temperature is hot during the day but approaches freezing at night.

The sun shines pretty much every day from April to October. November and December are a bit wetter but still dry enough to have an enjoyable trip. From January to March the mountain is closed for the monsoons.

Your host will provide water, transport, and guide you to the best local restaurants. Your host will also provide local snacks.

On Java you’ll spend most of your time in warm, humid conditions but may face cold, windy conditions at higher altitudes. The sun is powerful even when it’s cold out, so don’t skimp on sunblock and you’ll spend at least some time on beaches so don’t forget your swimmers. In general the following is recommended packing:

  • Light-weight, breathable hiking shirts and long trousers
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Warm jacket (fleece, wool or down/synthetic)
  • Thermal top and bottom
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses and sunscreen)
  • Bug repellent
  • Sturdy, broken in hiking shoes or boots
  • Swimsuit and small towel
  • Head torch
  • Small backpack for carrying all your personal gear
  • Trekking poles (optional)
  • Sandals (optional)
  • Trash bag for collecting litter and helping clean up the mountain (optional)
