Summit Java’s Gede Peak

An adventure scaling the mammoth stratovolcano, Mount Gede. 2 days.

Set in one of Indonesia’s first ever National Parks, Mount Gede is particularly famous for its birdlife, but what really attracts the mountaineers is its sheer size; at 2,958m above sea level, Mount Gede actually translates in English to ‘Big Mountain’.

This two-day adventure heads straight from the airport to the summit so be ready to get stuck in. On a route rich with flora and fauna, you’ll trek through dense jungle, refreshing waterfalls and soothing hot springs until you clear the tree line and camp under the stars.

Using every minute available to you on this trip, you’ll reach the summit in time for a sunrise like you’ve never seen and have breakfast at new heights. This jam-packed adventure weekend includes:

  • 2-day guided trek
  • 1 night accommodation
  • Services of a local, English-speaking guide and porters
  • All meals while trekking.
  • Air-conditioned transportation from and to Jakarta’s Soekarno Hatta airport.
  • All permits and taxes for access to Gede Mountain.
  • Standard first aid kit
  • Mineral water on the hike
  • Camping equipment (Summer weight 4 man tents, mattress and sleeping bag)
  • Cooking and eating equipment

Perfect For: Those with stamina, a good level of fitness and previous hiking experience.

What to Expect

Day 1: Trek to Suryakencana Meadow Campsite

Your host will collect you from Soerkarno International Airport for the drive to Cibodas, where you’ll meet your guide for a briefing and equipment check. From here, you’ll take local transport for the short drive to Gunung Putri gate, the starting point for this trek.

The route begins through farm land and scented pine forest, before the ever-changing terrain takes you into dense jungle. You’ll stop for lunch still surrounded by rainforest and then the landscape will open out as you reach higher altitude.

Your campsite is in the sub-alpine setting of Suryakencana Edelweiss Meadow. As your guide and porters put up the tents and make dinner, you will be free to soak up the environment and take some stunning photographs.

6-7 hours trekking. Approximately 12km of trekking.

Day 2: Summit Mount Gede

The great thing about an adventure weekend like this is you get straight to the main event; a 03:00 start with a welcomed cup of tea will set you up to attack the summit of Mt Gede (2958m) today and reach the peak in time for a magnificent sunrise.

You’ll enjoy a breakfast to remember on the summit with views of Mt Gede’s active crater and the classical triangular silhouette of Mount Pangrango (3019m).

After such an early start, you’ll be happy to hear the descent is easy; you’ll stop off at hot springs, waterfalls and swamps, finishing at the Cibodas Botanical Gardens.

Your transfer will collect you from Gunung Putri basecamp, taking you back to the airport for your forward journey home – now that’s how to make the most of your weekend.

6-7 hours trekking. Approximately 12km of trekking.

Accommodation

Your campsite is in the sub-alpine setting of Suryakencana. You’ll camp among Edelweiss – a flower which is conserved and only found at heights above 2000m.

Topping out at 2,958m, Gede is part of the ‘Ring of Fire,’ a section of fault lines that stretches through Japan and south-east Asia. Volcanic Ash makes for fertile ground, allowing rainforest to dominate the volcano’s lower slopes. As you breach the treeline, you can see the neighbouring islands.

Frequently Asked Questions

The following are not included in the trip price:

  • Flights to Indonesia
  • Accommodation after the tour
  • Travel insurance
  • Tips for your guide (optional)

This trip will run with a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 10. There will be 1 guide for a max of 4 hikers. On our social dates, this trip will run with a minimum of 4 people. If the minimum group size is not hit 30 days prior to departure, the trip will either be cancelled or rearranged.

Sure can! A lot of people do, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

The lower slopes of Mount Gede are relatively gentle and easy, and the temperature is warm. As you climb the terrain becomes more challenging. Some sections through the forest are steep and slippery, even exceeding 50-degree slopes, and the hike to the summit is something of a scramble.

At the summit the weather is cold and windy, and the night temperatures approach freezing.

This hike demands good levels of fitness and some sections require considerable agility. Previous mountain hiking experience is essential.

Your hosts are very eco-conscious. They pack everything out—including human waste—, are adamant about not littering, and encourage travelers and guides to clean up the mountain as they go.

Your guides and porters will cook delicious, fresh meals for you throughout the trip—and plenty of it. Examples include mee goreng (fried noodles) and nasi goreng (fried rice) with veggies, egg and meat; curries; fried bananas; pancakes; popcorn; and biscuits. Hot drinks are always available, and you’re provided with 3L of water per person per day.

Absolutely, just let us know at booking.

In Jakarta temperatures are invariably hot. On the slopes of Mount Gede, however, the temperature is cooler, especially at night.

The sun shines pretty much every day from April to November which is the best time to visit. The mountain is, however, open year round.

Your host will provide water, food, a toilet tent, and cooking and eating utensils. Porters will carry all this equipment along with the food and water. They can also provide a rain coat on request.

On Mount Gede you’ll hike in warm, humid conditions though the night will be cold, especially at the summit. The sun is powerful even when it’s cold out, so don’t skimp on sunblock. Please pack the following:

  • Light-weight, breathable hiking shirts and long trousers
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Warm jacket (fleece, wool or down/synthetic)
  • Thermal top and bottom
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses and sunscreen)
  • Bug repellent
  • Sturdy, broken in hiking shoes or boots
  • Swimsuit and small towel
  • Head torch
  • Small backpack for carrying all your personal gear
  • Trekking poles (optional)
  • Sandals (optional)
  • Trash bag for collecting litter and helping clean up the mountain (optional)
