Day 2: Tretes - Kokopan - Lembah Kijang

Mt Arjuro is part of the ‘Ring of Fire,’ a section of fault lines that stretches through Japan and south-east Asia. Volcanic Ash makes for fertile ground, allowing rainforest to dominate the volcano’s lower slopes but the upper paths can be a treacherous mixture of sharp, broken lava and volcanic ash.

Surabaya in eastern Java is the gateway to the Mt Arjuro trek..

The lower slopes are relatively gentle and easy, and the temperature is warm. As you climb the terrain becomes more challenging. Some sections through the forest are steep and slippery, even exceeding 50-degree slopes.

Above the treeline and ascending from caldera the ground can be loose and ashy—think two steps forward, one step back. On the peaks It can also be windy, cool and occasionally wet. This is a tough trek that requires a good level of fitness.

A good level of fitness is required to negotiate these two mountains, both of which are over 3,000m in height. In places the terrain can be challenging, with steep gradients with loose ash and rock, so previous mountain hiking experience is required.

Your guides and porters will cook delicious, fresh meals for you throughout the trip—and plenty of it. The dishes will include black meat soup, chicken with a local sauce, vegetarian soup, spaghetti, hamburgers, green soy-beans, chicken curry and a range of fruit. At sea level Java’s temperatures are invariably hot. But at higher altitudes the temperature is cooler, approaching freezing at night, and the summit is invariably cold and often windy.

The sun shines pretty much every day from April to October. November and December are a bit wetter but still dry enough to have an enjoyable trip. The mountain can be climbed year-round but at its best from May to October.
