Hike to Semeru's Ranu Kombolo Lake

Shorter hike to the basecamp of Java's highest peak, passing through lava fields and camping by stunning lakes. 3 days.

Two days are perfect to get a taste of Java’s highest mountain. Enjoy one night at a local homestay and another night camping under the stars on the shores of Ranu Kumbolo lake, where you’ll be awakened by a beautiful sunrise. This is a hike suited to those who shun crazed midnight scrambles to a summit but prefer instead to keep their nights for sleeping and trek through the day. There are still some challenging climbs along the way, but this is a trek you can do without being a super-fit. Your adventure includes:

  • 2-day guided hiking
  • 1 night in a homestay, 1 night’s camping
  • Return transfer from Surabaya Airport
  • Services of a local, English-speaking guide and porters
  • All camping equipment
  • All meals and water during the hike
  • National park permits and fees
  • Trekking insurance

Perfect for: Fit, if not regular hikers who want to experience a trek without breaking a sweat.

What to Expect

Day 1: Getting there

Meet your host at Surabaya Airport for a briefing and gear check before you head off.

There is a four-hour scenic drive to Ranupane Village, the last village before Semeru. From here you can head to beautiful Ranu Regulo Crater Lake for a stroll and a look around the village, and visit Coban Pelangi waterfall.

Later you’ll check into the homestay and have dinner.

Day 2: Ranupane Village - Ranu Kumbolo Lake - Kalimati and back (optional)

Wake up, have breakfast and get ready to start the hike. Around 08.00, before setting off, you will have a briefing with Mt Semeru’s rangers.

You will start your five-hour trek to Ranukumbolo Lake at around 09.00. Here, you will stop to rest and enjoy lunch by the lake.

After lunch, you either have the option to relax by the lake or hike to Kalimati and back - where many stay if they are pushing on to the summit for sunrise. Kalimati lies in view of the rocky cone of Semeru summit and is 3 hours of beautiful, easy hiking across savanna-esque landscapes.

Back at camp, enjoy the evening with a dinner at the campsite, before some obligatory star gazing.

Around 5 hours trekking, 200m ascent.

Around 8 hours hiking, 700m ascent, 500m descent. Hiking to Kalimati

Day 3: Ranukumbolo Lake - Ranupane Village - Surabaya Airport

After sunrise over the lake and breakfast in the mountains, set off at 9:00 for the four-hour hike back to Ranupane for lunch. A vehicle will be waiting for the drive back to Surabaya.

Around 4 hours hiking, 200m descent.

On the night before the trek, you’ll stay at Marsell Homestay in Ranupane Village.

While on the mountain you’ll camp. Your porters will carry and set everything up for you, including tents, sleeping pads, and sleeping bags.

Mt Semeru is part of the ‘Ring of Fire’, a section of fault lines that stretches through Japan and south-east Asia. Volcanic ash makes for fertile ground, allowing rainforest to dominate the volcano’s lower slopes, giving way to edelweiss meadows and alpine flowers. The upper paths, through dunes of volcanic ash, can be treacherous so stick close to your guide.

This trip will run with a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 10.

The lower slopes are relatively gentle and easy, and the temperature is warm. As you climb the terrain becomes more challenging. Some sections through the forest are steep and slippery, even exceeding 50-degree slopes.

A reasonable level of fitness is enough to negotiate this mountain. Gradients can also be steep but if you hit the slopes at your own pace there’s really no excuse not to do this trek.

Your guides and porters will cook delicious, fresh meals for you throughout the trip—and plenty of it. Examples include mee goreng (fried noodles) and nasi goreng (fried rice) with veggies, egg and meat; curries; fried bananas; pancakes; popcorn; and biscuits. Hot drinks are always available, and you’re provided with 2L of water per person per day.

Absolutely, just let us know at booking.

At sea level, Java’s temperatures are invariably hot. But at higher altitudes the temperature is cooler, approaching freezing at night. Most visitors find the temperature at Ranu Kumbolo, at 2,400m, makes a refreshing change from Java’s lowland heat.

The sun shines pretty much every day from April to October. November and December are a bit wetter but still dry enough to have an enjoyable trip. The mountain is closed from around the end of December until April.

Your host will provide water, food, and cooking and eating utensils. Porters will carry all this equipment along with the food and water.

On Mt Semeru you’ll hike in warm, humid conditions at the base and but this will cool as you ascend and will drop further at night. The sun is powerful even when it’s cold out, so don’t skimp on sunblock. Please pack the following:
