What to Expect

Thursday: Arrival and Stargazing

At the airport, you will be welcomed by your guide who will drive you through the Reykjanes peninsula to your accommodation in the South of Iceland.

On the way, you will stop by a few of the significant sights to give you a feeling of what Iceland is all about; remoteness, beauty, and its geothermal power.

Depending on the conditions, you will spend your first evening searching out the Northern Lights. This elusive and ethereal phenomenon is what draws thousands of travelers to Iceland every year, thanks to its distance from the artificial light.

If you just want to sit back and relax on your first night, then put on your bathing suits and settle into the hot tub with a beer, on the rooftop of the Midgard Base Camp.

2,5h drive to Hvolsvöllur, unlimited stargazing

Friday: Explore the South Coast

Enjoy your breakfast at Midgard Base Camp, before heading on towards the south coast with your guide.

The natural scenery here is second to none. You’ll be able to explore the Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, the black sand beach at Reynisfjara and Dyrhólaey island. Finally, finish the morning with a trip to the local farm in Þorvaldseyri to check out the film on the eruption in 2010.

You will also have the chance to visit the Sólheimajökull outlet glacier to witness the ongoing changes of the glaciers. So put on your crampons and explore the ice sculptures, water cauldrons and deep crevasses of this breathtaking glacier.

You’ll be able to spend the afternoon however you like. Either relax at base camp or visit the local swimming pool. The pool area consists of an outdoor pool filled with warm water, hot tubs and a sauna; a very Icelandic experience.

Several short hikes along the coast, 3-4 hours Glacier Hike

Saturday: Explore the Eyjafajallajökull volcano

Your penultimate day will be spent exploring the surroundings of the famous Eyjafajallajökull volcano; the one that erupted in 2010, causing mass disruption to most of Europe.

The area of Þórsmörk has been shaped by the eruptions underneath the glaciers, making the landscape particularly unique. Your guide will take you to the main sights as well as show you the aftermath of the 2010 eruption.

Spend your last night at the swimming pool or the newly open Lava Center, just a 10-minute walk from Midgard Base Camp. After dinner, it’s time again to find your spot on the rooftop and watch the stars.

Ca 4-6 hours hiking and snowshoeing (duration depends on weather conditions)

Sunday: Head back to civilisation

There are several options for the last day. Depending on the weather and snow conditions, you could either hike to Reykjadalur geothermal hot tub, the Golden Circle or the Þjórsárdalur valley.

Once you’ve made the most of your last day in the Icelandic paradise, your guide will take you back to the airport to catch your flight home in the evening.

Reykjadalur hike: 3-5 hours, 2-hour drive to airport

Sure can! A lot of people do, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

You’ll have the choice of Icelandic fish and meat dishes with plenty of vegetarian options available. To sweeten up your trip your hosts will have some traditionally Icelandic treats prepared for you throughout the trip.

Absolutely, just make a request when booking.

This trip is open to anyone, you do not need any particular experience. However, you will be hiking on some days so a base level of fitness would be recommended.

Yes, of course. We work with some of the best leaders in the industry.

Our adventures are very social in nature and we’ve seen lots of new friendships born out of them. Expect a mix of solo travellers and very small groups, all with a shared appreciation of escaping the city for the great outdoors to try something new and meet new people.

The weather is the most unpredictable thing in Iceland. However, as this trip runs in the Winter from September to early June, you can expect snow and frost.

During September - October, you might also face some rain but as you come into May - June, the days will get longer and warmer.

No, unfortunately the Northern Lights are notoriously unpredictable so it is impossible to say that you will definitely see them. The chances are highly dependent on the weather and visibility, as you will need clear skies to view them properly.

However, this trip will definitely increase your chances as you will be staying in a remote location, away from light pollution and in an Icelandic hotspot for Aurora spotting. You will also have to opportunity to search for the Northern Lights with your guide every night of the trip, giving you the best chances possible to see them.

You will be provided with crampons for glacier hiking, but that’s about it.

Your host recommends that you bring:

  • Inner, middle and outer layers
  • A hat
  • Gloves
  • Walking shoes/boots
