What to Expect

Day 1: Arrival and Five-Course Dinner

As you arrive at Tromsø, you’ll either be picked up from the airport or you make your own way to the Scandic Ishashotel, which is right on the waterfront.

Check into your hotel and unwind in the beautiful surroundings of Tromsø city.

On your first night, you’ll be able to enjoy a 5-course dinner in one of Norway’s most highly acclaimed restaurants. The food is a fusion of traditional Norwegian dishes influenced by French cuisine and international dining trends.

Settle into your hotel as the real adventure starts tomorrow.

Day 2: Polaria Aquarium and Tromsø

After breakfast at your hotel, head to the Polaria Aquarium where you can discover an array of fascinating marine life, as well as learning about Norway’s nature and the Northern Lights.

From here, you’ll head straight for lunch before continuing onto Tromsø to check out the city’s most popular sites.

In the evening, you will board one of the elegant, antique vessels for dinner. This ship has been sailing through the Norwegian sea since the late 1800’s, and tonight it will take you to view the Northern Lights over the ocean.

2-3h Polaria Aquarium, 2h Tromso Tour, 4h Dinner Cruise

Day 3: Sommarøy Whale Research Programme

Pack your bags, because today you will set sail for Sommarøy or “Summer Island” where you will spend the next few days with the whale research programme.

Firstly, our marine mammal scientist will introduce you to the whales of Norway and the research program through an engaging presentation. Then, you can take part in the research and become a marine biologist for the day, setting sail for the whales.

Participation in this voluntary, so those who simply want to enjoy the show are welcomed too.

In the evening, check into the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel and relax. Your hotel is a 2-minute walk from the beach, should you want to explore.

4-5h on the boat

Day 4: Sommarøy and Northern Lights

You will spend the day searching for whales, sea eagles and other incredible wildlife as you explore some of the most beautiful fjords which look over the pristine, dramatic landscape.

In the evening, you will spend your dinner beneath the stars in the Aurora camp next to the beach as you seek out the phenomenal Northern Lights.

4-5h on the boat, Aurora Camp from 18:00 onwards

Day 5: Tromsø and Dog Sledding

As you leave Sommarøy, you’ll be able to enjoy one last day watching the whales before you head to Tromsø for the last adventure.

In the evening, you will set off dog sledding into the mountains as you search out the Northern Lights, one more time.

Enjoy your final dinner in Tromsø.

4h dog sledding

You’ll be treated to high-quality food made with fresh, local ingredients where possible. On your first night in Tromsø you’ll enjoy a 5-course meal at an outstanding restaurant that serves Norwegian fusion food with international influence. On your Northern Lights dinner cruise you’ll be served a delicious meal prepared by one of Tromsø’s best restaurants in an incomparable setting.

Absolutely, just make a request when booking.

This trip is open to anyone, you do not need any particular experience.

Yes, of course. We work with some of the best leaders in the industry.

Our adventures are very social in nature and we’ve seen lots of new friendships born out of them. Expect a mix of solo travellers and very small groups, all with a shared appreciation of escaping the city for the great outdoors to try something new and meet new people.

Winters in Norway are cold, but due to the warm Gulf Stream current it’s much more pleasant than other countries at the same latitude.

Daytime temperatures average just below freezing. Tromso is above the Arctic Circle, so expect little daylight (approx. 3-4h) to no daylight during your stay.

No, unfortunately the Northern Lights are notoriously unpredictable so it is impossible to say that you will definitely see them. The chances are highly dependent on the weather and visibility, as you will need clear skies to view them properly.

However, this trip will definitely increase your chances as you will be staying in a remote location, away from light pollution and in an Norwegian hotspot for Aurora spotting.

You will be provided with a flotation suit during the exursions, but that’s about it.

Your host recommends that you bring:

  • Camera and binoculars (optional)
  • Wool under layers
  • Wool socks
  • Winter suit
  • Winter boots
  • Gloves, scarf & hat
