What to Expect

Day 1: Arrival in Ivalo

You will arrive in Ivalo Airport where a private minibus will take you straight to the hotel for your first night.

Settle in before dinner, where you will meet your guide and be giving a briefing about the trip. Your guide will help you check your gear and tell you about the upcoming route for the week.

The whole route is on Northern Light hotspots, so every night you should be able to look up from your hotel to the unique phenomenon.

Day 2: Heading North

Enjoy a hearty breakfast at your hotel before heading North on your snowmobiles.

Depending on the weather conditions, you will either travel to Lake Inari or straight through the fells and wilderness. Lake Inari is the third-largest lake in Finland and is usually covered in ice during winter.

Lunch will be at a cosy wilderness hut on the trip before you continue onto your accommodation.

There is also the option to add on a culture stop at Siida Museum or Pielpajärvi Wilderness church.

200-250km of snowmobiling

Day 3: - Nuorgam

Today’s route is relatively easy and can be varied in length.

You will make your way to the northernmost village of Finland, Nuorgam. Incidentally, this is also the northernmost point of the European Union.

Enjoy lunch on the way and dinner in your accommodation at the Holiday Village.

There is also the option to add on a reindeer safari or a king crab safari.

120-200km of snowmobiling

Day 4: Nuorgam - Arctic Ocean

Your day will begin with crossing the Finland-Norway Border and heading onto the shores of the Arctic Ocean.

Here, you will visit the small fisherman’s village of Gavesluotka. You will either have a picnic lunch on the shore or visit a local restaurant in Tana Village. Take in the impressive surroundings and you might even see a whale in the distance.

In the afternoon, you’ll begin the journey back to the Holiday Village in Nuorgam in time for dinner.

150-220km of snowmobiling

Day 5: Nuorgam - Ivalo

Spend your last day snowmobiling all the way back to Hotel Ivalo.

Tonight, you will enjoy a farewell dinner with your team - one of the highlights of the expedition.

240-270km of snowmobiing

Day 6: Departure

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel, before you take the transfer back to Ivalo Airport.

During this adventure, you’ll travel 950m from Ivalo City to the northernmost village of Finland Nuorgam and then onto the fisherman’s village of Gavesluotka, in Norway, on the shores of the Arctic ocean.

On this adventure, you’ll be able to experience the wildness and deep snow terrain of Finland as you travel away from the city and up towards the ocean. The Arctic ocean is home to many endangered marine species such as walruses and whales, and you will be able to get a firsthand look at the world’s smallest ocean when you reach the fisherman’s village of Gavesluotka.

Whilst Ivalo is a travellers gateway to Saariselkä and Urho Kekkonen National Park, it also boasts a variety of winter activities such as cross-country skiing and husky or reindeer sledge riding. The city is also a hotspot to see the Northern Lights.

Start point?
You will be met at the Ivalo airport where you will be transported to your hotel. Your transfer will meet all flights scheduled to land at 18:00 or earlier.

Finish point?
Your tour will end in Ivalo, where you will be transferred back to the Ivalo airport. You are free to book any flight departing after 12:00.

Your host will be in touch before the trip to finalise details.

Getting there and away?
Ivalo Airport (IVL) is served by international flights and connections from Helsinki. You can get any flights that suit you, but please note that your guide can only organise one airport transfer per group due to the remoteness of the location.

You can use also Rovaniemi or Kittilä airport, where there are more arrivals coming, and take a bus connection to Ivalo.

If you would rather take the train, it is possible to travel from Helsinki to Rovaniemi or Kemijärvi and then catch a bus to Ivalo, but this may require an extra day for travelling.

For extra financial protection against unforeseen circumstances such as erupting Icelandic volcanoes, we recommend you book your flights using a credit card.

Sure can! A lot of people do, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Much Better Adventures are very social in nature and we’ve seen lots of new friendships born out of them. Expect a mix of solo travelers and very small groups of 2 or 3, all with a shared appreciation of escaping the city for the great outdoors to try something new and meet new people.

It is suggested that you have some previous experiences on the snowmobile to be sure you’ll enjoy the long distances covered every day.

Absolutely! Just let us know at booking.

This adventure can be organised between January and March.

Temperatures in winter can vary from -30°C to -5°C, but while it is cold, this usually makes for the deepest powder snow in these months. While January is usually shrouded in the darkness of the Polar Night, the sun comes out in February and marks the start of the spring. By March, Northern Light viewing is often the best and the days are usually sunny and crisp.

Should the weather conditions cause the trip to be too risky, the trip might be interrupted and the group will be returned to the accommodation.

Yes, of course. We work with some of the best leaders in the industry.

Your guide suggests that you bring:

  • Mid-layers
  • Shell-layers: jacket, long shell pants
  • Gloves/mittens
  • Hat
  • Personal Medication
