Dogsled and Sleep under the Northern Lights in a Tipi

Spend the night in one of Norway's most unique wooden Tipi Bungalows watching the sky after dogsledding through Norway. 2 days off work.

Alta offers the perfect backdrop for this dog sledding tour under the evening sky, as it is one of the Finnish hotspots for Aurora spotting. This trip sees you drive dogsleds through the backcountry, before spending a night in cosy tipi bungalows under the stars. With a ceiling to floor glass window, you could even get a glimpse of the Northern Lights, if you’re lucky. This dog sledding adventure includes:

  • 1 day of dog sledding
  • 1 night of accommodation in a tipi bungalow
  • Dinner and breakfast
  • Local, professional English-speaking guide
  • Transfers to/from Alta City Centre
  • Jacuzzi and sauna

Perfect for:
Anyone who wants to experience Finnish dog sledding under the stars, but only has one night.

What to Expect

Day 1: Arrival and Dogsledding

Your guide will collect you from Alta City centre and bring you to the husky kennel where you’ll meet the dogs.

Once you arrive, your guides will provide you with thermal suits and instruct you on how to handle the dogsled. From here, it’s time to get out and have fun with the pups! You’ll be able to enjoy a 60-minute guided dog sled ride through the fresh evening air.

Once you’re back, enjoy a well-deserved hot shower and then a delicious dinner in the dining room of the beautiful, renovated barn.

Then, sit back and relax in the lodge, but make sure to leave time for a dip in the outdoor-jacuzzi and a visit to the sauna for that truly Finnish experience.

When it’s time for bed, head to your cosy Tipi bungalows, which has a floor-to-top window, that lets you watch the stars overhead. If you’re lucky you might get a glimpse of the infamous Northern Lights.

1 hour / 15km of dog sledding

Day 2: Departure

After a well-rested night under the stars, enjoy breakfast in the lodge before heading back to Alta for the rest of your journey.

The Tipi bungalows come with a double bed, wood-burning stove, comforters and heated blankets. They are insulated against the winter’s cold and one section of the wall has been replaced with a floor-to-top window that lets you look out over the night sky.

Alta City - or the city of Northern Lights as it is affectionally known - is located in the Northernmost county of Norway. Thanks to its subarctic and stable climate, it is the perfect choice for those seeking out the Northern Lights.

It’s history as a Northern Lights city actually dates back 1899 when the world’s first Northern Lights observatory was built on the top of Mt. Haldde. More recently, the Northern Lights cathedral was built in Alta City, inspired by the cascading Aurora waves, and is an incredible example of modern architecture.

In addition to this, the city is also famed for its dog sledding and in fact, hosts the longest dogsled race in Europe.

However, this trip will definitely increase your chances as you will be staying in a remote location, away from light pollution and in a tipi bungalow where you can watch the sky all night if you wish.

The cold season in Alta City lasts for over four months, from mid-November to mid-March. During this time, the weather can get relatively cold with temperatures in January reaching lows of -10°C, however, you can expect average temperatures of 0°C
